The 8500 does not have POP protection, while the X50 does. Further test results can be seen at

I find it hard to beleive the 8500 outperforms the X50 in Ka

I have had personal experience running both in 2 different cars and I(X50) got an alert first

Oh well...

maybe the performance could vary between detectors that are the same model. The X50 tested was Rev. 5, the 8500 tested was Rev. 15

the original 8500 has better range according to our tests...

Also keep in mind guys that there is a thing called manufacturing variance. NO two X50's, V'1, RX65, etc. ever perform the same because of this.

Ditto cellphones, ham radio txcvrs, etc. -- not a unique situation...but testing, say, 10 of each to avoid sample variations would be prohibitively time-consuming and expensive...

8500 has SWS but no POP.
8500 X50 has POP but no SWS.

8500 has better performance on Ka (per GoL tests).
8500 X50 has better performance on X and K.
(In my experience, the X50's Ka performance is still top notch).

8500 X50 is available in red or blue. 8500, red only.

Otherwise, the two units are more or less identical.

The two are very similar units. However, rather than honoring the "software upgradeable" claim they used as a #1 selling point for the 8500, they decided to fleece their customers and make them buy a "new" detector called the x50.
