DO you guys think that the new Whilster SE Models hang with the top dogs such as

1. rx65
2. x50
3. Bel 955
4. Bel 995
5. Sti
6. 9500 IX

I'm going to go ahead and warn you in advance that you are going to get a lot of different answers. I won't provide my own answer because I never actually owned what we consider to be the "top dogs." After the 9960g, the Redline may be on the list as well for detectors to purchase. :D

6. 9500 IXI've tested the new Whistlers head-to-head against the last four units on that list and I've found that they are nowhere near as good. Here are some videos of me testing a new Whistler Pro78SE against my 9500ci, V1 and 9500ix...

http://www.radardetector.net/forums/detector-counter-measure-videos/46212-pro78se-9500ci-v1-9500ix-comparison.html

...and here are the test results that myself and Freebird compiled on an over-the-hill test that we performed.

I agree with DriveWJason that you will get various answers... but I think the testing DJ posted (as well as Freebird) is the best proof of how well the SE vs Top-dog units perform under similar circumstances...

In other words... you will hear Whistler fanboys get on and say that they do hang, but TESTING proves that they do NOT.

With that said they aren't terrible units, and some people use them with great success...

But in the big scheme I have to agree with the assessment DJ made: They are nowhere near as good.

I bought 690se and Pro78se,,,
and Guess what? I sold both of them already(weak against ka 34.7 & lots of false Ka alert on filter 2),,and replaced with it V1 and 9500ix......:)

SE are no where near top dogs IMO...

I'm a Whistler fan... but NO, Whistler is not a Top Dog. It's an awesome detector for the price, but if you want killer range, then no, don't get a Whistler.

Also, I haven't jumped ship to the SE's yet because not all the "bugs" are fixed yet, so if you decide to go with Whistler, go with the trusty Rev. C, not the Rev. C+ of the SE's.

The Rev. C RDs are the XTR-690, Pro 78, and XTR-695.

I'm not sure that all of these would be what I consider to be "top dogs". And some of them are totally different RD. Kind of hard to compare. Wonder why the V1 is not listed. I think the V1 faithful on here will be all over that. Of the six listed I have used 2 (Bel 995 & 9500ix) and own a 9500ix. I have seen reviews on most of these that rate them high but I think many of the "tests" are done under very controlled conditions and not necessarily real world conditions for everyone. I have always questioned "tests" and prefer to test on my own under the conditions that I drive. I mostly use the 9500ix and Whistler XTR-695SE. I have found that my 695 usually alerts a second or two before the ix under the same conditions. But normally use each differently - the ix in town due to the GPS feature and the 695 out on the road. My driving habits I think are very different from most on here. Higher rates of speed tend to shorten detection and notification times. Lots of other things can affect the results of RD.
I have found the 995 to be a very good detector but think the 9500ix and 695SE work better for me. The RX65 and 8500 X50 have good reviews but I have not used them so won't comment further on them. I am not sure about the 955 but I think it is a lesser Bel than the 995. As for the STi, I have read mixed reviews on it and believe that most owners of it have it more for its stealth capabilities than detection qualities although I hear that is good too. Personally I find that the 9500ix, Bell 995, and XTR-695SE are about on the same level. Because the XTR690SE and XTR 78SE have basically the same detection capabilities as the 695SE, I would guess they are about at that same level too. I have a 78SE but just got it and have not had it long enough to make a judgement on it yet.

If I did a lot of highway driving, I would probably get a STi or the new Escort Redline. I am watching the reviews on the Redline.

I do think that the user of a Whistler SE user would not be wise to use them as a countermeasure at some of the speeds that I read on the forums. The SE models should be ok for most regular drivers. I have used Whistlers for years and have found they work well and have never gotten tagged yet. I got the 9500ix specifically for RLC and the blue display. Cost, availability and other factors play a role in deciding which RD to get too.

I think if you like a certain RD and it works for you, then, good.

No Way, 9500ix is same level as Whistler 695SE or 995:bs:

From my experience they are, generally. I found that the 995 was the slowest reacting of the three. Compared to the non-SE version of the 695, the 695SE is very sensitive and have found that the 695SE usually detects faster than the 9500ix by a second or more (they are close though). And the 695 has been real good at picking up IO at longer distances. When driving through NM, AZ, and CA, we chose to use the 9500ix primarily because of cameras, but I think the ix was a bit slow in detecting, especially K band, and wish we had taken the 695SE instead but were glad to have the 9500ix due to all the cameras. I'm not sure about laser detection though because we had very little laser action and could not confirm the hits we did had actually came from LEO.

No Way, 9500ix is same level as Whistler 695SE or 995:bs: A 995 would be not too far off (being based on the same platform), but not a Whistler in terms of sensitivity. The tests just don't add up to those results.

The release of REV C was aimed to the X50 in 34.7 Ka band and could stay right with it and sometimes out alert the x50 because of the reaction time. Even though the x50 might have an edge over REV C the Whistler would beat it by many seconds due to a very long period of processing the radar. These are my findings in Texas on flat terrain. This debate can go on all year ! but more people on here are having better Luck with the SE's now then when the first production run came out. Veil Guy even mentioned REV C was giving the STI a run for its money sometimes. Mike B. has quoted he has seen a 695 beat a V1 in Ka band. I can go on forever. My point is what ever Whistler has inside and the patents are somehow not adding up to the raw sensitivity it is missing. The response time is a big plus against the competition. From a very well known source The SE platform is a attack against the 9500i series.

By contrast, the V1, 9500ix and STi, while certainly not as sensitive as the 9500ci, compare rather well.

From a very well known source The SE platform is a attack against the 9500i series. If that was the goal, then Whistlers has failed miserably. There is absolutely no comparison between the 9500s and the Whistlers as far as performance goes. These videos completely prove this fact, without a shadow of a doubt.

While I am a relative noob in the RD world, I am quite the accomplished cell phone geek.

My experience is that a $50 POS flip phone cannot compare to a $400 Blackberry or iPhone. While there may be some similarities (both phones could make/receive phone calls), the additional bells and whistles clearly make the Blackberry/iPhone a better overall device.
The same goes for RDs. My question is this...would anyone EXPECT to achieve similar results to a $400 detector by using a $150 RD???

Not sure this is a good comparison. Have been in a location within 1/8 mile of a cell tower with a clear line of sight with my practically new Blackberry phone and could only pick up a weak strength signal - but a guy standing right next to me with a $50 block phone got a fast clear connection - the cell tower and both phones all had the same service provider. I tried a call a bit later from nearly the same position and got a quick clear connection. I am not sure why.

I think RD have similar issues. I'm not sure any of the SE RD are equal in all respects to the list of "Top dogs" but I do believe they can perform at times, in some situtations as well or better than some of those listed. I am not a professional RD tester but I have done some of my own observations of the
695SE and the 9500ix and find the 695SE seems to usually alert to Ka and K a bit faster especially on the highway. But my highway driving is somewhat limited and usually in the same area. I did find the 9500ix slow in alerting to low power K band. I really like the GPS capabilities and blue display of the 9500ix and think it is an excellent RD.

All of the RD listed are very good from what I have heard and read but I have only used two of them so other than what I have heard and read I have no practical experience with the others.

That does not match what I've seen at all. I've tested 2 9500ixs against 4 Whistler SEs and the Whistlers do not perform anywhere near the Escorts. Doesn't matter what I think, I have seen it. There could be something wrong with my 9500ix but I doubt it. I am aware of other tests and reviews on these same RD that I have read. Simply because the tests don't agree, does not necessarily disprove either one. Nearly all of my driving is in mostly the same area, under the same conditions. The testing I did with my 695SE and 9500ix was a one time, limited test and the SE consistantly alerted to stationary CO Ka at least one full second before the 9500ix did and two to three seconds against a stationary "your speed is sign" both approached around a gradual right hand curve at the PSL. Those results seem to be about the same for other enforcement in the same general area. I usually use the 9500ix in town because of its GPS capability and blue display ( for some reason I have problems with red displays) and generally got pretty good reviews, and I normally use the 695SE on the highway. I do not think the 695SE would out perform the ix all the time. I have no reason to think that because I haven't compared them under many varying conditions. When I drive in areas other than where I normally drive, I am VERY careful - even with a RD. I have no personal experience how the other SEs perform compared to the 9500ix because I haven't compared them. I have a Pro78SE but have barely used it but it seems to work very much like the 695SE - but I don't know for sure, yet. I don't know how the 690SE would perform. Other than the Bel 995 - which I was disappointed with, I have no personal knowledge of how any of the other RD on the list in the first message in this thread - I don't have any of them, never compared any of them. I've read multiple of reviews and opinions on all of these RD - that's part of the information I used to decide to get the 695SE and the 9500ix. I could have bought any of the RD menioned but chose to buy the ones I have - it's my choice. I originally had a non-SE 695 and then bought the 9500ix. When the XTR-695SE came out I bought one to replace the original 695. I find the SE version of the 695 much more sensitive than the non-SE. You did the tests against the SE RD under whatever conditions. I did tests with one XTR-695SE against one 9500ix under the conditions I mentioned - one time - very limited and saw the results and in no way think they would perform like that under all conditions, or even any other conditions. I did not see your test, or any of the others - just read about them. I don't doubt them either, in fact, I appreciate them, I just prefer to run my own tests and go with what I decide. While there are things about both the them that I don't care for, both my XTR695SE and my 9500ix generally perform as marketed and as I expect. I am very happy with both of them given my driving area, habits, and features and costs of the RD. They serve me well. I am confident that all of these RD perform well. Whether any of them are "better" than any of the others, can be very subjective. Just because there are tests and reviews out there, does not mean that there is always consistancy with those tests and reviews. I intend for this to be the end of my participation in this thread.

Thanks!

Thanks!

High end Whistlers have superior response time.

They do.. but approaching a constant-on source, as Gokhos did in his comparion, raw sensitivity would be more useful.

Or you could get a combination of superior response time and raw sensitivity and get a V1. ;)

Gokhos, you need to upload videos of this observation. Your findings just don't add up to what numerous test results clearly state.

Whistler detector's are in no way even close to being considered top dog detectors. For spending under $150 on a detector they are good but they aren't even in the same atmosphere as the upper level detectors. Neither should the BEL v955 be considered an upper level detector as it is a budget detector.

My BEL v995 is right on par with my V1 and it has been tested to have the quickest response time to alerts by SML a few years back:eek:

HAHAHAHAH Whistler in the same league as Escorts and Valentines :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Whistler Zombies are worse than V1 zombiesAgreed. At least <<JAZZY>> has lots of data to back up his opinion. The Whistlers consistently finish near the bottom of every legitimate(non-SML) radar detector test.

I doubt Gokhos faced the same encounter as the way your resting is set up.

Did you guys do your testing on a fixed course? If so, that is totally different from the scenarios Gokhos is describing. Also, I'll just add on, there is now way tha Keto and Gokhos could be the same person. Gokhos has better manners.

I also am not questioning what Gokhos is telling us about how his Whistler and 9500ix compare. I'm sure he's reporting exactly what he's seeing. I'm also confident that there is a logical explanation for why his results are different from mine and the results from the guys in Michigan, but I'm 100% not accusing him of making anything up.

He would agree that the Whistler SE series isn't as sensitive as the top dogs. All he knew was that it alerted before the 9500ix in those particular instances. We don't want it to look like people are questioning his integrity in those instances.

I would bet the SE's can beat an 9500ix in off axis encounters. The ix being so tunnel vision would be the reason.

I own an 9500ix also, as does DJ. I was teasing him and making reference to Jag42. When Escorts out perform the Whistlers Jag42 likes to play the QT card against Escort owners, and he has a valid point per DJ's QT videos.

What really matters is, well, subjective. :D
