The year isn't over yet and Escort is releasing a new RD which is supposed to be a game changer in the "raw sensitivity" category.
You may want to hang on a bit if you're looking for the "best".

It also depends on how much you want to spend...under $400...under $500...under $1600?
If under $400, the V1 wins. You will notice that whenever a new radar detector comes out, everbody always wants to know how it performs against the Valentine One...because the V1 has been the top of the mountain for many years.

I think most people here will say the "best" is from one of two companys Valentine research or Bellscort.
That said, Top 3 I'd have the 9500ci, V1 and 9500ix. I'll leave the STI driver out because the Redline should be better, and I'll say the Redline and 9500ix can be swapped depending on your deffinition of best.
But for absolute best as the owner of a V1, 9500ix and a 9500ci, I have to say the 9500ci is the best hands down. My ci has much better range than my V1 (which has sllightly better range than my 9500ix), and the GPS features are great. Laser shifters suck, but are good "detectors" so the CI is still better than a V1 with laser (so you'll know your getting a ticket before the lights come on). That said the CI comes at a price point that for most people may be more than the additional sensitivity is worth.

The best?
Excluding the Redline in no particular order
1) 9500ci
2) V1
3) 9500ix

The V1 has been the leader in laser detection and it is still #1 among detectors $500 and under. Bel and Escort finally put out products that can detect laser as good as the V1 but they will cost you $1100 STi-R or $1600 9500ci.

And NONE of these detectors will save you from a laser ticket except maybe the 9500ci (and if you want real laser protection even the 9500ci in the bottom of the pack for performance, but all the others on this list offer NO LASER PROTECTION). Anyone reading this for advice should know that Laser detection just lets you know you're getting a ticket before the lights and sirens come on.
So do NOT buy a V1, 9500ix, Redline for laser detection.

Why would anyone fathom the idea of banning someone for asking a question about the top radar detectors available for 2009. This can help someone make a choice who's looking for a top notch unit. Well maybe we should bully all the newbies, and every time they ask a question we feel is not a worthy question just threaten to ban them. Thanks to all you guys who gave a respectable educated answer. After all that's what forums are all about learning.

Everyone is new to the idea of forums at one point in their life... so I don't think it's fair to be search nazis or to throw around a ban hammer whenever someone posts a common question.
It's going to happen no matter what... and driving out new members won't help very many people IMO.
Think it was a bit of a joke. The question is open ended...

Wow it seems like the 9500ci is king, will V1 make something that will out do the 9500ci? I know there is a big price difference between these two and the V1 is king in the $400.00 range, but I wonder is V1 will produce a high price highly sensitive unit to counter the 9500ci.

The V-1 packs a lot in one small, lightweight, portable, reasonably-priced package.

And that demonstrates exactly why the question was ridiculous in the first place. You FAIL to define what "best" means. It's as pointless a question as asking what the best women are, or what the best car is, or what the best beer is. It is almost entirely subjective. If we could all agree on what the "best" radar detector was, the forum would die.
Did you read "What makes a radar detector the best?" thread pointed out earlier? There is MUCH, MUCH more to it than sensitivity. The "best" RD for sensitivity sucks for reactivity and completely misses a lot of radar shots, even at close range.
There is no "best" radar detector. There's only the one that is best for you. And until you tell us what you are looking for, we have no way of telling you what that might be.

Quite a few members in this forum answered my question with an educated response, and in most cases I got the answer I was looking for. They read the question and gave me their opinion on what they felt was the best performing RD. That's all I was asking for.

Those opinions are useless if you don't have all the necessary information. You'll find quite a few people that believe the 9500 and V1 are actually the worst detectors on the market. Would you take their word for it if they told you that fat Pygmy women were the "best" women too?

LOL I wanna see someone post that the 9500 and V1 are the worst radar detectors on the market. If someone does I'm sure they will be shut down real fast. To many tests to many facts to many owners with many saves, lead me to believe that these units might not be the worst out there.

Exactly my point. Plenty of people out there running around and swearing their Cobra is teh aw3some. And lots of people like Rockit who don't understand enough about radar detectors to interpret the information to determine what is a good detector and what is not.
There is a very strong argument to be made for the 9500 being one of the worst detectors on the market. In fact, the argument has been intelligently made here in the past, and no, it wasn't "shut down". Likewise, many people argue that the V1 is too chatty to take seriously in the city, resulting in it being ignored, which would also qualify it as a less than ideal detector.
I dunno what it's going to take for you to realise, dude, raw sensitivity is only one of many attributes of a radar detector. It is not the only one. And it is not even the most important one.

Rocket has been around quite awhile, he's owned many radar detectors. whistler spectrum, cobra trap shooter 4100, beltronics vector, uniden, escort passport 4600, all have worked well and saved me tickets on many occasions. And the newest unit is a whistler pro 78se. At age 45 I've seen many generations of detectors. I haven't been following radar counter measures in some time. So I was just inquiring to find out what company or companies were producing the top units for 2009.

This has been mentioned countless times in this thread but a good rule of thumb is that any time you post a "Which is best?" question, regardless of the discussion forum site you're posting on, be sure to post what you mean by at least including needs/wants/budget. Otherwise you're likely to only get fanboy responses. Best always means different things to different people.
Unless you can understand why someone thinks it's the best it's a pointless discussion. You're just taking a poll.

Welcome to the forums. I think you asked a very legitimate question.
It's a great place to learn and gain and share information. Lots of opinions on here as well as varying respect.
I recommend that you look and listen and learn, do your own research and then make your own decision about the RD you are interested in.

This is always a hard decision to make but it either could be the V1,STi and X50. Now since the Redline has some out it might be the V1,STi, and Redline. I didn't forget about the 9500ci since it did very well at the Languy invitational.:)

V1 is not so bad, only $400, and you cant really get anything really good under $300, so what’s an extra $100. :)
If not the whistlers or entry level Bel's will also do fine. Sensativity is certanley not the only factor when buying a RD.
