Forget about laser detection. Its worthless. Refurbished escort 8500s are pretty cheap.

There is a good bit of laser in IL. Especially around Chicago. No RD will save you from laser but a good laser jammer will.

Get a refurd 8500 for $150 or a Bel 955:

The 8500 will give you a fighing chance against RADAR. It will not give you a chance againt laser, nor will another detector.

There are three radar bands: X, K, and Ka. A refurb 8500 will protect you from these. You still have to worry about I/O and QT though. Read up on the forum to find out what those are. The 8500 will not protect you from police laser. You need a laser jammer to have protection from police laser.

The cheapest yet effective set up? refurb 8500 $150 + M27 laser jammer is four hundred something.
Snoopy I think we're confusing him about laser and radar.

Escort 8500 Refurb. = $150
Generally the minimum accepted active laser countermeasure (jammer) is the Blinder M27 which is $480. You might could find an older M25 for 300-$400.

I wouldn't trust an 8500. Spring for the extra 60 bucks for a Whistler Pro-78 SE and get peace of mind.
But yeah, if you get hit by laser, you're a goner. I don't know why they even bother putting laser detection in radar detectors, because it is absolutely pointless. Jam or die.
And therein lies the dilemma. If you have the best radar detector in the world, are you going to drive like you're protected? That's a recipe for fail, because you have no protection against laser.
If you're not going to buy both a radar detector AND a laser jammer, you should just save your money and slow down, rather than buy a false sense of security and end up paying tickets instead.

Technically the 9500ci and the upcoming Qi45 both of which are by Escort but the laser shifters on those suck mightily so you might as well just buy laser and radar countermeasures separately.

Agreed, the OP is still thinking there is one "detector" that we protect him from everything.
No radar detector can save you from police laser. You have to purchase a laser jammer if you want protection from laser.

All the detectors mentioned above will detect radar and laser. However even if you detect laser, the LEO gets a speed reading so quickly that you cannot slow down. You need to purchase a separate laser jammer to deal with laser enforcement. NO radar deector has laser jamming capabilities.
Do not think you are immune to radar or laser threats because you own a radar detector.

A good radar & laser detector gives you a fighting chance against radar. Don't ask why.
In Missouri, laser is used more in the well financed communities and the HP rarely uses it. LASER IS MUCH MORE COMMON IN ILLINOIS. YOU HAVE TO BUY A JAMMER TO DEFEND AGAINST IT.

I can't tell for sure how much laser there is in IL. However, I hear its pretty common. Check out the regional section to see what they use by you. There are reliable laser detectors, but as soon as you detect it your speed is locked. This all takes about .25 of a second.

Even if all laser detectors were reliable, they would still be useless. Once it alerts, the officer already has your speed, so what's the point? You cannot brake fast enough to make a difference.
For jammer info, read the FAQ in my signature. But you're not going to like the price if you don't want to spend more than $200 dollars on an RD.

There is a good bit of laser in IL. Especially around Chicago. No RD will save you from laser but a good laser jammer will.
I would recommend not using a laser jammer in illinois. It's federal law prohibited.

Federal law applies to only one state?
I don't run a jammer, because the money isn't there yet, but I know several folks who do. Don't JTG and you're fine.
As far as laser usage, I'm in the north shore and it is widespread. My specific community (which is not overly funded nor rich) uses it, probably about 50%.

Laser is commonly used in IL. Radar also. You never know which one unless you know the areas you are traveling in. Many times you will get surprised by a LEO (law enforcement officer). The 8500 is a great rd. And so is the Whistler Pro 78. Yes laser detection is a little late for rd's but you may have a chance at picking up laser scatter (NOT MENTIONED) from laser being aimed at a vehicle in front of you. Laser jammers are Illegal in IL but that is NO problem. All you need is a kill switch for any LJ (laser jammer) being used in IL. LJ starts to go off, you hit the kill switch quickly and this is the scenario. Officer gets his/her reading on the lidar gun, and you go about your busy day. Both individuals happy. Have you also thought about investing in a CB radio (citizens band)? This is helpful on different freeways/highways/ and two lane roads. It requires a little different language but after a while, you'll understand how to use it. It really helps when you find out where the LEO is sitting/moving at which mile marker/intersection/place of business. Especially if you know the LEO is sitting 50-100 miles in front of you. You can be perpared (sometimes unless they pick up and move because they are bored).

If I'm not mistaken, the 8500 is a windshield-mount detector. Another alternative around that price point is the Bel 955, which I own. It doesn't have the sensitivity of the real high-end RDs, but my own experiences with it have been great so far.

STATE law
Federal law applies to only one state?
State law applies to one state, federal law on signal jamming applies to radio waves so RADAR Jammers are federally prohibited, the FDA allows LIDAR jammers but individual states are banning them.

Becaue the Escort 8500 Rev 15 was and still is one of the great rds of it's time. Just ask happya$$ or stealthjamal, and they will vouch for it. I have one and it works great everytime I plug it in. The unit only cost me $50 but it was out of calibration on 33.8, so I had to send it in which cost me an additional $80 but it does the job now.
