View Full Version : Do I have a Defected Bel Rx65 Unit?
Limited Atonement

Could any one that has a Bel rx65 (software 4.5) tell me if I have a Defected unit are am I expecting to much from it?
Here are the Symptoms.
1) I was following behind a LEO for approximately 12 miles this morning and only picked up Ka band (less than 50-80 feet no car between us) 3 times for no more than a few sec. at 2 to 3 bars, only one time out of the 3 it indicated full signal it lasted 2 to 3 sec.
2) I was pulling around the back side of a MacD after a long needed piss brake and only when I was in the line of sight of a different LEO (local) did the unit pick up the signal it was a K band (3 bars) he was less than 120 feet away.
3) Every morning I pass a road side speed indicator (for lack of a better name) it has a K band, with a straight Hwy the rx65 picks up the signal a miles away 1 bar then move up until it reaches full signal right close to the sign it decrease as I drive away from it notably close to the same rate (ok I guess?).
4) Closed to the same location a LEO is parked there every morning (heavy road construction) At appox 100-150 yards I pickup 3 bars Ka band now in this case the car is turn face the other lane (as if I was behind him) as I pass him I read no signal after around 100-200 yards (I think at this time the signal should increase to a full signal but it stay the same 3 bars).
All this Morning! I drive 105 miles round trip every morning.
1) I was in the line of sight of LEO he was shooting me dead on at 200 yards max Ka band 3 to 4 bars I move to the right lane no Bars.
2) Passed a LEO I was going west, his car was pointing (parked) west to shoot east bound traffic (4 lanes) only pick him up for a few sec.100 yard behind him and 100 yard running parallel to him.
I’ve had the unit for 3 days now it is set to Hwy. (max) with all band and laser active.

In my honest opinion you have a typical Bel RX 65. That's why I returned it and got a V1. I know people will think I am bashing the RX 65. I just wasn't happy with it's performance. I never got a full alert no matter the conditions.

1) LEO was using instant on. Two times he fired the front antenna (facing away from you), one time he fired the rear antenna (facing you, causing full alert).
2) LEO was once again using instant on, or had radar facing away from you. If signal gets stronger after you pass the cruiser, the radar is pointed toward you after you passed him.
3) Sounds normal to me.
4) He could have been using instant on, or switched antennas, or had a hand-held unit sitting on the seat, or RX65 is defective, not aimed properly (is it level?), or blocked by something. Where do you have the detector mounted? Try a different position.

I wouldn't say that without asking a few questions first...
1. How do you have your RX65 mounted? Is it actually level, with a clear view of the road?
2. If you were following the LEO, and he only has front radar on (could have been instant-on too), you will only get the reflected signal bounced back to you to be detected which is going to be a lot weaker.
3. Speed Signs, at least in my area, seem to be higher powered than the handheld radar that the LEOs use. When I pass one, It usually goes to a full alert.
4. The one at Mcds, could have been another K signal in the area (auto door), he could have been using instant-on and pointing away from you?
5. The Ka by the sign, again - radar pointed in the opposite direction you are going is only gong to be bounced back by other objects in front of it.
If you have everything on - I would turn off SWS, Ku, POP (if it is not in your area) and put X on City mode or disable it if it is not used in your area for sure. Also, keep Ka on INTL mode.
Please share exactly how you have your detector mounted though, as this sounds like a mounting issue.

When I had the RX 65 had it mounted mid windshied, yes level, no not obstructed in a mustang cobra. Never, even with speed signs would it go past 6 on the counter. NEVER.
One time a ISP anus used KA instant on driving the opposite way on a 2 lane highway and it went to 4. He was maybe 1/4 mile away from me.
It did always give me laser alerts when I was shot though. I will give it that.

I have the Rx65 mounted center of the front wind shield ¼ of the way from the top I will put a level on it before I leave today. Nothing in front of the unit and nothing behind it (sits 3” below the rear view mirror). It’s very hard to believe that this is a top performer (if it is not Defected, I think it is), If it isn’t Defected then radar detector as a whole are a lot more hype than performance! Now not to kill the Golden Calf (not trying to piss people off) but just to said I was expecting more the performance of Speed Labs and Radar Roys performance numbers not the 200 yards max number I’m getting. I’m good as busted ($180.00 min ticket) at the 200 yard max performance. I live in Florida so if that helps. By the way thanks for replying everyone, would like to hear more input.

I must comment on this.....because this is about the third time I've read someone telling Dave that if he "doesn't have anything good to say about Bel, stop pushing Valentines and leave the thread". Yet all anyone has to do is go to the Whistler forum and read the first half dozen or so threads where people are asking about a particular Whistler model......and almost always someone will pop into that thread and suggest to go buy a Bel!!!
Why such a double standard here?

Davekr, I also say that you did not have a "typical" RX65. Maybe yours was defective somehow. There are too many people that are happy with theirs, and too many tests by multiple sources that say the RX65 IS one of the top 3 - including Roy, who says it is the best!

I didn't think so either. But some guys on the board say they are rejects, or may be stolen. It looked like a brand new detector. I just want to save face with fellow people of the board. :)

I asked an EBay dealer, who sells RX65s and X50s for really cheap, about the units he sells. He has been an Ebay dealer since '99 and has a 3000+ feedback score of 99.8%. His EBay page boasts a "3 year exchange warranty" and the units are "Brand New, Factory Sealed" and "We do not sell any refurbished or used units, all of our products are 100 percent brand new, with the latest upgrades" etc.
I told him that I knew an Escort/Beltronics authorized dealer, and he said these prices are below his wholesale prices and the units can't be brand new. I asked if his units were actually re-manufactured, refurbished, 2nds or grey market. He responded:
it depends, i get my units from many different sources some times i get my hands on new items, while most of the time i sell refurbished items, so i guess the answer to your question is that most of these units are refurbs. but they work just like new and if there is a problem with it i will exchange it for another one.
bcorby-Simple. When you pull your $250 X50 out of the box and find that it's actually a 7500S (which only retails for $225 or so nowadays), all you can do is complain to the dealer (who will inevitably tell you that you didn't read the item description closely enough and therefore it's your fault) and leave negative feedback.
If Roy (or any other reputable dealer, for that matter) sells you a defective unit or sends you the wrong model, he'll correct the error and back up what he sold you, instead of saying "too bad" and responding to your negative feedback with "needs to learn how to read the item descriptions."
Not to mention that, as Roy pointed out, many eBay dealers are less than reputable. I've heard (unsubstantiated to this point, but very believeable) stories of huge eBay dealers with massive feedback files taking advantage of people with little to no feedback who hadn't been on eBay for long by just not sending them the product they ordered. After all, when the negative feedback starts flying, who are the shoppers going to believe, someone who has a feedback rating of 3 with 1 negative, or someone who has a feedback rating of 10,000 with a few negatives from people who are no longer members and had low feedback ratings to begin with?
You might find a great deal on eBay, but with detectors, the odds of getting screwed are much higher than the odds of getting a huge bargain. I'd only get a detector on eBay as a backup (if a low-end Bel or something were to come on the market at a low price, low enough that there's really nothing to lose), or just for fun (i.e., if one of the original Escorts were to show up with a low serial number, or if I ever decide that I want to be the proud owner of a RMR "detector").
sorry jim i was typing when you were posting. anywho, it all depends i suppose, i got real lucky with my X50 off ebay, but prob wouldnt do it again, whatever though, its all good.

That might be cool... One of these times we're going to test a few of each detector if we can, so that the results will show if there is any "manufacturer variance" between different units.

I think that is a great idea for GOL.... Haven't seen SML or anyone do that. You could then take the average of say 3 of the same models - unless one was waaay off.

You could also try the BEL E795, it is only 80bucks now (on sale) at RadioShack and for that price this detector is the best I have seen. I am currently testing the unit and find it to be more then ample as a backup for near anyone, or a main unit for anyone who speeds maybe 5 over, or sometime 8mph over. It is a very easy to use, straight forward detector that falses very little (less then some higher end units) and I dont think you will get more for the money. 'Boomerman' actually has a comparison on these exact two detectors 795 VS. Pro58.
Here is the thread: If you want the jist of the whole Pro58 vs 795 report, go to 'page 3', (no not the skimpy dressed girls 'page 3', for the European counterparts who may know what I'm joking about  ) WELL skip to page 3 and read what 'Boomerman' thinks overall, and I also have a few added parts here and there on my escapades with this under 100 detector.

Hey All,
I am a board newbie here and have been following some of these posts concerning the RX65. I just purchased one 3 weeks ago off ebay. I hope I did not make a mistake! It was advertised as new, came in the original plastic wrapped box with all papers and parts. I use it in the city mostly, and use the Autoscan mode. I get alot of K, KA alarms at about 3 bars max but never see any LEO in the area. Any suggestions for driving in the Dallas, TX area as far as custom settings?
I purchased the radar from ktel6547 (ebay seller, perfect feedback), I paid $219.00 for it and he offered a 3 year warranty for an additional $28.99 (I passed on the warranty). Anyone have any info on this seller?
I will continue to read and post as I would like to get maximum usage from my radar and keep abreast of future upgrades etc...:D
Thanks,

The alerts your getting are false alerts (automatic doors and such) remember its a RADAR detector not a cop detector. not all cops have radar and any cop that does have a radar unit in his car does not have to have it on. just search around the board and youll prob figure everything out there, if not make a new topic

Well, I believe that is below wholesale cost, so the unit is definitely not brand new unless it was stolen. Most likely is it refurbished and repackaged. Your warranty from Bel is now void, and if you need to send it in for repair - you will pay $89 or around there.
Did the unit look new once you opened it? What firmware revision is it?
Does it have black or blue lettering on top?

I'd rather see the testing of 5 identical detectors from an authorized dealers go head to head and see how much varies there is

Raven,
Hi, thanks for the response, Yes the unit appears to be brand new, if it was repackaged they did a hell of a good job! It has black lettering (with white writing), I tried several times to access the firmware version (power on, hit city/brt simultaneously during power up) all it does is go through the power up mode then stops on PILOT HWY (HWY flashing). It never shows the firmware version...
Additional info on RD bottom label, Beltronics, 162009-00 (upper right hand corner), serial number AG034758 3705, FCC ID: QL4G1S7

Cool, I was afraid I might have been a victim of another ebay scam. It seems to work pretty well, as I said I drive in town mostly, and am getting aquainted with the different radar bands/warnings. Hopefully I will be able to customize it in the near future. This board has already been a wealth of knowledge, I will report on my findings as I experience more radar.

Davekr, you definitely had a defective unit if it detected laser well. I swear mine has cataracts when it comes to laser. Also, buying from ebay is always a bad idea.....a lot of repackaging going on. My RX65 always goes to full alert on K band signs and against Ka instant on (version 4.5).

Thanks,
Myles
That is who I got my RX 65 from!!

...would like to hear more input.
I would have to say that it does not sound that it is giving you great performance, if I had it I would be disapointed too. In addition having a older Bel985, your performance sound out right horrible.

Update on RX65 Shortly after I wrote my initial comment I sent my RX65 back and received my new one about 2 weeks later and the performance is outstanding. As I stated earlier I drive about 105 miles a day and with road construction I pass a least 2 LEO each day. Here is some real world performance.
K band
A straight road with two (about 15 degrees) hills I picked up a leo at 1 mile.
I pass a road side speed indicator everyday on my way to work and I pick it up about 1.3 miles (one hill 25 degrees) before it. On the way home same speed indicator .6 to .8 miles this is rear detection!
KA band
I've had a multitude of encounters here are some real world numbers.
A straight road no hills 1.7 to 2 miles (best performance so far)!
60-70 degrees curve very wooded area .8 miles 55mph speed zone (I was driving 70 mph no ticket )
Speed trap LEO side of the road 45 mph speed zone pick him up at .6 miles in a wooded area around a 50 degree curve and over a small hill (I was driving 55 mph no ticket   )
In each of these cases i had plenty of time before encountering the LEO.
All the above is with the default settings. Tomorrow I will start testing with the US mode in the KA band. I would recommend this unit to everyone. Thanks to all for the feed back.
My problems with the defective RX65
xband and kband didn't see much difference in the performance. KAband performance was very poor (sucked). I had a lot of falses on the laser at least 3-4 falses a day. 1-2 POP falses a day.
The new unit to this day No laser or POP falses. A matter fact I have not had a False. I do not count CVS stores as a false it is picking up a true k band signal.

Good to hear...
Sounds like the performance I am getting out of my RX65.
I think the people who are experiencing low Ka range with the X50 should return theirs for a new one like you did. Sometimes there can be bad batches I guess.

I envy you. I am always hearing people getting up to these maximum ranges. It is good to know, with hopefully even more improved detection for the new STi, just think of the continued improvement what we will have in another 2-3 more years. I dream of great Ka detection (and what falses? there is none) and a AL6 aka Laser Defender jammer, I am in heaven.

I think many people don’t realize that most of the times the advantage works in the drivers favor (that is if he has a laser jammer, Veil and one of the big three radar detectors). There is always an exception, instant on radar because there is no legal radar jammer to date.
Why is this?
1) Flat straight roads-A radar detector has only to detect a signal, LEO radar has to send a signal reflected off a particular vehicle and process it (heavy traffic makes it harder to determine an individual vehicle).
2) In hilly areas- Where many drivers feel it is a disadvantage, this is not totally true, the cosign effect comes in to play, advantage driver.
3) Heavy fog –reduces the range for both parties, goes back to point 1 noted above.
4) Low heavy cloudy days- Radar bounces off the low clouds giving greater detection range for the driver.
5) Laser can be legally jammed and with great products like Veil; advantage driver.
6) Curved roads- LEO Radar waves diverge as much as 9 to 29 degrees over a half mile the radar wave can scatter as wide as 400 feet to a ¼ of a mile.
I’m not saying that if you have all the best counter measure equipment you will never get a ticket. But for those who do have this equipment the odds are definitely in their favor, most of all if they drive smart.

the reason people say get a bel in the whistler forum is because in the real world everyone knows the beltronics are a better company and better product line than whistlers(most of them), so if they have trouble with their whistler, posting "get a bel" seems to make sense since they offer such a wide variety of top[ of line performers in any tests.
but if your in the bel forum and saying "get a valentine" people dont like this because there is not a big difference in performance from the two(other than laser) with their top models so if i owned an rx65, (best in alot of peoples mind) then i dont want to hear "get a v1" in a bel forum. can you see why people offer up the bel in other forums?
