View Full Version : Trying KA guard off for a while.

Just turned KA guard off the other day, figured i had enough time running the V1 with it on to be able to tell the difference.
So far only 1 KA false that wasn't really there, other than that's its been ok. No real encounters though yet.

I'll be surprised if this doesn't happen with your falses. I get about one Ka false every five miles in normal traffic with Ka guard off.

LULZ!
I only run the V1 on the Thruway, and as such... Ka-Guard off works fine there... I get maybe one false from it every 20Miles.
Alas, I ran my V1 for a couple years before I dared to turn it off... and when I run my V1 in the city... my falses go just as v1user predicted yours would.

I had it off for a while, and rather enjoyed it and then about id Feb this year everyone al of the sudden started clearing the ESD7000s out of Wally World, they set off the V1 with the Ka guard ON, needless to say after a day of perpetual Ka I decided many false alerts was better than one solid alert all over town.

Well ill post the videos later but apparently KA guard off has no real benefit other than making more falses. Definitely doesn't really improve all KA encounters.
But that's only 1 nights encounters (3) the other 3 were really bad falses.

lol, your absolutely 100% correct. Cant wait to post the videos, one has 6 bogey's...

Thats one false too many.
I get only valid alerts with Ka gaurd on and POP-off that is the way I like it:cool:

Ok here it is...
V1 KA guard performance against 9500ci on 34.7 around the bend:
YouTube - 34.7 V1 CI around bend
V1 KA guard false, false false........:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q48Onb8CBpU
So KA guard gives little to know additional useful sensitivity and ridiculously odd falses. It literally renders the V1 completely erratic more than it already is.
I'm going to turn KA guard back on.

Hmm, not according to GOL or Knighthawk:

I think you should do more testing. IMO one encounter is not enough to make this claim yet.
It literally renders the V1 completely erratic more than it already is.
:p So are you going to get rid of the V1 now or are you not done critiquing it yet?

I think you should do more testing. IMO one encounter is not enough to make this claim yet. True, I will. But i did say useful, testing results are very different than real world from my experience.
A few extra seconds of alerting and falses with 6 bogeys is not a good trade off IMO. Had a few other random falses too but figured ill give it some more time because they were more tolerable than the 6 bogey video. However that first video really put doubts on how much KA guard helps, It was way bad contrary to testing we have seen.
Ill keep it off for another week and see how it goes. I usually get 1-2 KA encounters daily so its usually pretty easy to see a difference.
It literally renders the V1 completely erratic more than it already is.
:p So are you going to get rid of the V1 now or are you not done critiquing it yet? Well i certanly wont be using it with KA guard off long term. But the erratic behavior can sometimes be a good thing.
I guess by erratic i mean inconsistent good sensitivity. Except for K band, which is consistently the same as my 9500ix.
Over all the V1 with its "L" modes works well if i go through town fast. And the KA reactivity on down hill encounters is very good.

Would have to agree here, esp if your doing 800+ mile road trips.

Doesn't bother me at all... on the thruway, my radar detector is the LAST thing I listen to...
My CB's out rank it, along with GPS (trapster), along with rabbits etc... but mehhh if I listened to my V1... I could see why it would be a problem.

But for the most part I just use my V1, GPS Trapster, and Jammers to get buy in NY

Though i don't have a CB i use the combination of trapster to give me an early heads up of LEO hiding spots, 9500ci to notify of real situations, and the V1 to confirm the situation.
Works quite well.

Ok, so here is 3 great videos showing V1 with KA guard off.
V1 getting closer to alerting the same time as the 9500ci with KA guard off:
YouTube - V1 34.7 KA guard off
FF to 1:20 unless you like Joe Satriani.
YouTube - V1 34.7 KA guard off
Finally a really good video showing the advantage of having KA guard off, is it worth it??:
YouTube - advantage of having KA guard off on the V1?
This last video was great, but i found my self initially ignoring the V1 till the CI confirmed it was a real threat.

I liked the idea of Ka guard off in places I wanted extra sensitivity, like the canyons and mountains, but for every day driving it sucked. It would be nice if the V1 had a button you could push to turn it on and off ... but why would Valentine ever add a new feature? LOL.
Plus programming the V1 is such a pain that I ended up leaving it either on or off for long periods of time. Redline is the best of both ... Ka guard off range (or better) with minimal Ka falses.

I did too, but its too difficult to change it on the fly like you said.
So far that last video is the only time i was able to see the advantage of KA guard off. Other than that one my ci still beats it by 3-6 seconds or alerts about the same.
I would love to get a RedLine, i think i would be the first to run ci & Redline together as a full time team.

i turned my Ka guard off as well so that i can get the max range on ka as that is the radar of choice here.

Let us know how it goes. So far i have only had one encounter where KA guard made a difference and the rest it didn't make a difference much, if at all.
I do get a lot of KA falses though. Which i really don't like.

On the 3.872 that I have, turning off the Ka guard does help in the test that I have done with sitting Leo's Ka radar by a few seconds or as much as 1/4 of a mile, not a continueing alarm. But the best thing acording to U-tube, it responds faster for I/O Ka hits. It could save one in some examples when getting supprised with an I/O with other autos around which might confuse a Leo for a few seconds in order for you to get to the psl. One must try being fast but hope a rabbit saves one self. :)

I usually turn up Ka sensitivity and turn Ka guard off for long highway trips but for daily driving its Ka guard on and normal Ka sensitivity. I haven't really noticed many Ka falses with the Guard off but that's also because I'm driving through the middle of nowhere (route 81 in PA most of the time).

I did this once as an experiment. Sitting in traffic on the Cross Westchester Expressway, I watched the V1 use all three arrows, the bogey counter go 7-9-8-9-8 and the device was basically useless due to the Microwave pollution from "crap detectors".
Maybe it helps in the Arizona deserts, but I don't go there.

Well i am turning KA guard off today. I have done enough testing for me to relies it almost renders the V1 useless with the additional falsing and breaking every few miles. The sensitivity improvement wasn't enough if at all for me to notice other than one encounter.
The excessive falsing caused me to doubt weather it was real or a false, so even if it does add any extra sensitivity its completely lost with doubting the unit.
And like speedlaw said, it may help in the Arizona desert, but you really don't need extra sensitivity there anyway.

Sensitivity of the V-1 is not adjustable. The way it reports, however, is.
