I live in Minnesota I was wondering should I have pop on or off. My other question is does MN use pop radar? Is pop same as instant on. I was reading somewhere said you get better range with pop off? Why is this how much better.

Here are a few sites/articles that talk about POP RADAR
Haven't heard too much about POP from most members, mainly I think due to it's very limited use as only a few states even have the contract w/that particular RADAR gun.

Most say turn POP off on the V1 because it cuts down on false Ka alerts, which is true. POP is not the same as I/O. I/O can be used by any radar gun; POP is a feature of certain radar guns (MPH Bee III is one of them I believe). POP sends out a timed (16 0r 67MS) burst of radar to get a reading before the detector detects it. Range with POP usually starts a great discussion, but POP on is believed by some to help with QT.

I think pop is used in MN. Not completely sure thought, but even if it is, it's rare for that matter. Here is my thread I started. I thought I got hit by POP, but I'll never know for sure.
Personally I leave mine on since I don't get so many falses that it's irritating.

Left out the MPH Enforcer 33.8 Ka. The local info states POP is used in MN. If MPH guns are used in your area, why turn POP off and lose a chance of getting a freebee warning before the gun is blasting you with I/O for a reading to ticket you? Good Luck in that situtation esp. with the faster Z25/35 hand guns! Yes, POP and Q/T (quick trigger) are in the I/O (instant on) group. No distance increase/decrease persay with POP on/off, just faster or slower or missed alarms depending on which freqs (guns) are used in your area.

I had a x50 got hit with i/o showed up as pop, I did not like my x50 way to many false alarms. distance was not very good.
How do you find out if pop radar is used in your state.

Personally I think POP is highly overrated. I think it is more of an advertising gimic more than anything else.

According to my thinking:
POP ON would help w/ QT K band.
POP ON hinders Ka QT (unless it is 34.7 QT - the freq that the Ka POP radar guns use).
If Im wrong with my logic, please correct me.

The radar reaction time test might help with your programming and use of POP/Ka Guard.

The hard way. I have CONFIRMED its use even in a state that supposedly doesn't allow it. Don't be that guy.
Yes, POP is highly overrated. BUT... unless you are being driven completely out of your everloving mind by J-out Ka false alerts on a daily basis, turning it off is just stupid.

so.. if I am in a state that uses pop (FL) and think that the advanced warning before i/o might be useful then is it still recommended to turn off ka guard to get more advance warning for ka band? The radar test graph shows both pop and ka guard off (not ka guard off alone).. any thoughts..

It's something you'll have to decide after testing to determine the false alert rate increase. Yes, you will get noticeably more range, but there comes a point of diminishing returns with range increases. How many minutes do you need to slow down by 10mph? Even my pitifully out of tune V1 gives me miles of range, so again, is an extra couple of seconds worth the extra noise? Only you can answer that question, and only after trying it out.
