So everyone freaks out about running radar detectors in Canada, VA, D.C, and Austriallia......but what about on a military institution? What do MP (militray police) do if they catch you operating a vehical with a radar detector? Just curious :)

I believe Radar Roy said in one of his videos titled (Radar detector laws) that you are not allowed to use radar detectors on in military base. the military are highly trained and are not a force to be messed with
Just my 2 cents.

I've used one on several military installations and never had a problem. Of course it was only visible if you where in my vehicle and this was back in the late 80's. If you got caught running one they would probably just keep it.

The MP's on military installations are pr****. I went to visit a colonel's hotty daughter way back when at the old Griffiss AFB and they wouldn't let me in because my car inspection sticker was over due!

They made me take it down.
I went on base last weekend, so I took it off before I got there.

I have to drive onto a military installation every day. I've never seen them use any sort of RDD. I switch off my V1 before I get to the guard shack so it doesn't light up or make any noise when I pull up. I've had my car searched multiple times and they didn't say anything about it. See my sig to see how it's installed...stealthy from the outside but hard to miss from the inside if they really cared.

I believe that all they do is alert your supervisor, but I've had a terrible time finding the actual law. That could be a PITA if it means you're doing push ups or toilet cleaning, but I'm just a contractor and I have a feeling nothing would really come of it.

As always, your experience may vary...

The base I'm currently working on has private security guards at the entrance. They don't care about anything but you having the proper ID. They have even told me they don't care about stuff like that but the MP's may feel different if you get stopped.

Yes, that is increasingly the case. Odds of an MP/SP caring about your RD are about the same as a city cop caring about the air freshener on your mirror. Odds are against it, but you never know. Worst case scenario is if you are active duty, and he has a hard-on for you. Then you get a citation, which goes to your CO, and results in a verbal counselling, and then you better not get caught with it again, or you'll be leaving your car at the front gate.

MPs/SPs are like any other cops. You got your young rookies who are out to find everything they can and prove themselves. You've got older NCOs who don't like officers, who give them a ration of shyte. Conversely, you have young soldiers who are intimidated by a blue sticker and won't bother officers at all. Then you have some that have been around long enough to realise that all that extra work doesn't get them anywhere, so they just ignore everything.

Regardless, they will not confiscate your RD. They will usually just tell you to turn it off and/or take it down. Especially if you're a civilian. Military tickets don't result in fines (well, usually), so there is no incentive to write a lot. To get a ticket on a military base, you usually have to do something exceptionally stupid.

I'm active duty AF and drive with mine on base daily. Occasionally one of the gate guards will ask me to take it down, to which I comply. Most of the time (90%) they do not say anything and I go about my business. The cops on base do not use Spectres or any RDDs. They technically can pull you over if they see it on your window, however I have NEVER heard of this ever happening. If you are pulled over for another violation (speeding, etc.) and they see it they will tack it on to your ticket. Now the thing is getting a ticket on base is that it isn't a fine....you owe no money. You are only required to inform your supervision and "points" are tacked on to your name (by the military, not the state). The violation determines the points, but generally 3 tickets within a year time period will result in you losing driving privelidges for 1 month. Another one after that and it goes to 6 months. After a year the points are wiped from your record. The tickets you get on base are not related to a ticket you get off base in any way. i.e. you can get 2 tickets on base and 2 off base and will not lose driving privileges. Other services (Army, Marines, etc.) may vary.

I'm active duty Navy and leave my high mounted hardwired V1 in 24/7. My friend is a MA (MP) and I caught him shooting me with K-band. I asked him about it and he got all freaked out that I had a radar detector. I figure it's up to the individual who pulls you over what they do with your RD. More than likely, if you're courteous, they'll make you take it down and warn you.

Just like Unkind here ^^, Navy bases are the same way with tickets and points resulting with you parking at the front of the gate if you get too many infractions. That would really suck because several military bases cover some serious distance and walking/hitching rides would suck lol.

I turn mine off when I approach the gate, and leave it off while on the installation. They never seem to focus on it to see if it might be on, so looks like they don't care. Several of the gate guards have seen me repeatedly and most are private contractors.

I'm retired and do know that when it comes to motorcycle, they are more strict on active duty and reserve. I don't have to wear reflective materials during daylight like they do etc. They usually get checked out well at the gates while I usually just get a quick card check and I'm on my way.
I assume if I forget to turn off the RD, no big deal if they say anything, but would probably come down harder on active & reserve. Maybe because I'm old and sorry looking they cut me slack. Just respect them and get the same in return.

I service equipment on a army & air base. The gate guards ask me to take it down (~30% of the time) when I am on base and I comply. Once I get through the gate I usually put it back up. It's high mounted by the rearview so they miss it alot more now that I have moved the location.

I never bothered to ask "Why?" since I dont fancy a night in the brig.

There's one Rentacop Pinkerton Guard that will always tell me to take it down. So in the interest of not pissing him off, I pull the RD down prior to approaching the gate. If I can see he's not at the shack, I'll just crank the volume down (and the others don't seem to care). When I get on base the SF don't seem to care. I've had to present my credentials to SF at the gates as well, and they didn't seem to mind my RD either.

When I was down in MD, I didn't push my luck and I put my RD in the glove box going through the gate (considering they asked me to remove my sunglasses for identification purposes every time I went on base), but promptly took it out and mounted it once on base.
