View Full Version : What bands (and laser?) used by California Highway Patrol?

I was going to purchase a Valentine a Beltronics STI for my friend since she's gotten a couple of tickets driving from Los Angeles to Arizona. My questions are:
1. What bands are used in CA/AZ?
2. Are lasers used in either state?
Since laser jammers are illegal here, is it worth it to get one of those radar detectors
anyway? Just wondering if it's worth the $$$$!

Ka and laser(Don't know the gun, but they all work the same.)
I've personally picked up 34.7 from them on the highways. I got a 33.8 in Los Gatos which is highly alarming.
1. What bands are used in CA/AZ?
Go to local and regional info and read the master list.
2. Are lasers used in either state?I know CA uses them HEAVILY
Since laser jammers are illegal here, is it worth it to get one of those radar detectorsGet the jammers anyway. It's like a $99 fine if they do manage to notice and only one person's ever got caught and it's cause he told them about them.
Don't get her jammers unless she knows how to use them.

Don't get her jammers unless she knows how to use them. That's true
Note that detectors won't (generally) help you with laser.

34.7 ghz is exclusively Stalker

California runs a mix of 34.7 stalker dual SL (highway patrol, mostly constant on...sometimes instant on) and local cops run K-band, stalker 34.7 and kustom 35.5 in the cities.
CHP also uses LTI Lidar guns, I know they used to use Ultralytes but now now I see them using LTI Truspeed's more
Local cops (SF Bay Area) in my area use Kustom Pro-Laser III's with motorcycle traffic cops working in pairs.

Local cops (SF Bay Area) in my area use Kustom Pro-Laser III's with motorcycle traffic cops working in pairs. Verifying, seen this. They sit in the median next to the fast lane, so if you keep your eyes open it's not a huge issue.
I still can't locate that 33.8 I picked up in Los Gatos. If MPH guns are floating around in Santa Clara County we're going to have issues if a creative cop tries out POP.

Well, I know she wouldn't be comfortable with anything illegal on her car (even if it is just a fix it ticket). So is the radar detector still worth it? Better than nothing?
If it were up to me, I'd get the jammers for sure, but I don't have to worry about it since my car is POS :) Unconstitutional for them to use lasers.

Yes, by far in my road trips I've seen more radar usage than laser usage. A radar detector will still be better than nothing. Note also that CA is pretty heavily littered by K band noise from industry and traffic sensors. You might want to consider either getting a 9500ix that learns these falses, or turn off K band altogether. Otherwise, she's just going to get annoyed by the constant beeping and learn to just ignore the detector.

Thanks for the tip. So the Valentine 1 and the Beltronics STI will not be able to learn the K bands that are false alarms?

No, they will not. Almost always, women hate the noises that RDs make. My girl hated my stuff until the 9500ix was released. Now, she runs one in her car at all times. The 9500ix is the best detector for women.

Also know, CHP is extremely sneaky on the 10 between LA and Arizona. They use alot of instant-on. The Arizona Staties are a little less sly, but I have seen them use instant-on as well. That's a rough stretch for speed enforcement.

I drive around there often, never ran into a 33.8 yet and but I have been laser tagged numerous times by motorcycle police in that area.

For her a ix will be great I just came thru CA. going to AZ and they have a lot of redlight camera and speed camera. I have the C50 which let me know where all of the camera at so the ix with the data base that you can download will be up to date.

what I've noticed in the last year driving/riding around LA and ventura county is that LE use instant on lidar/radar about 95%. it is very rare I get Ka band from CHP and local PD.
On roadtrips to central and nor cal I get Ka hits from LE so they are still driving around with radar on in less densely populated areas.
