I was about to go and get a E795 for $59 at Radio shack until I saw a few remarks about the Pro 58...then I started looking around and see there is also a PRO 73...more looking and I see these new XTR models that may also work...

budget is around $150 tops. I dont speed much and its just for the safety of it.

I am using an older Whistler right now but the sound is finally dying and its about to go in the trash

Just wait until you have enough money to buy a V1 you will be happy you did or Escort X50 both are top of the line. well hope this help...

Hey man Don't follow the zombies here, I don't know why people keep telling others to buy a V1 when the budget is not even close.... With that budget there are a couple of things that you can do, try to get a X50 from ebay about that price (not the best option and kind of difficult), you can buy a PRO 73, or wait until the GOL test where I think they might test it(XTR).. Best think is keep looking for good recommendations....

There is also a kind of similar topic with a similar budget

Right now the XTR's are just coming available so it is hard to get one at this time.
I for one will be buying the XTR 520 and 560 to test when they are available.

I dont need the best radar detector available....thats why I am not looking for a V1.

I dont speed much anymore butI always like to have one because I like to know where the cops are even if I am not speeding.

I was about to buy a E795 from the shack since it is on sale for $59 but I am also looking at the new XTR's

it doesnt matter how much of a speeder you are, your still speeding.

i think when it comes to radar detectors the only way to go is to get one of the Top 4

just my opinion, save your money and get a good detector

gentlejax
04-11-2006, 11:39 AM
that is your opinion but there are plenty of others who do not buy the best of the best and have good luck with it.

not sure why you are replying to the question if you are not answering it with a relavent answer.

not trying to be rude but I have a limit and it is not based on a $400 detector.

I spend maybe 10 minutes a day in my car and have little time to speed.

ok lets see if i can get back to the topic

Brand new, those detectors you mentioned are suppose to the best in your budget, Pro 58 and E795. when i was doing my research for a backup to the V1 those were the detectors that a lot of members recommended. Also older bel models are suppose to be really good

one of those 2(795 or 58 ) detectors didnt do very well in the GOL tests

i bought an 8500 for $100, just another option you can go

the 8500 is almost as good as the v1 in detection and they are dirt cheap used, you just have to find the right one, its hard when they are used. i met up with the guy who sold me the 8500, i got to test it and i got his info if anything went wrong

i have used cobras and whistlers and none of them compare to the top detectors thats why i dont recommend any of them

getting a ticket is a matter of luck, chance and common sense... not a matter of how often you do it

i know people who speed so much but no ticket, ont he other hand i know people who follow the speed limit more often then not and then the one time they decide to speed... they get a ticket

gentlejax

I have been watching the 8500's used but so far none that cheap.

I was considering the NEW XTR's in the hope that they are getting better than they were.

I own a whistler and I used to own a BEL 535i I think and it was very user unfriendly but I know they are better now.

just looking and waiting for reviews of the new stuff before I buy some old stuff

thanks

i can almost guarantee that the 8500 will be better then almost any detector outside the top 4

yeah i see them going for about $150

good luck finding your detector.

Hey man Don't follow the zombies here, I don't know why people keep telling others to buy a V1 when the budget is not even close....

Yeah, kinda funny...kinda sad. Someone says "I'm looking for a detector in the $150 range" and he's immediately greeted with basically "don't bother unless it's a $350-$400 detector!

I sometimes wonder if V1 owners are worried that their beloved detector's company will go under, the way they recommend them to any and everyone. Perhaps they fear that it might, and that's why they try to get Mikey as much business as possible......

Well, if the question was "REGARDLESS OF PRICE...what is the best detector I could purchase", then I'd totally and completely agree with you, f_399. But when someone pops in to the WHISTLER forum, after someone has asked "what can I get FOR UNDER $150"....and he's greeted with "don't boher unless you buy a Valentine 1"....

well......

MAN!!!!!!! I totally agree! The V1 isn't the only detector and it isn't even near his price range, so why even mention it. I am sorry, but it really gets on my nerves when ppl say to buy one of the top 3 when they are outside someone's budget and they don't really need one. I heard good things about the 795 and at $59 you can't go wrong. Heard great things about the Pro73 as well. I want one of the XTR models too. I am getting the 520 which is $159. Btw, I am not trying to bash on ppl, so sorta tired of ppl saying V1 V1 V1 (not saying it isn't a great detector)

Even though I own a V1 I can understand why some people do not want to spend that kind of money.
There are some good units out there that do not cost an arm and leg.
Sure they do not get the range as the big 3 might but they do give you plenty of warning to slow down.

I have my X50, sure, but I also have a Whistler 1730 that I trust, and somewhere around here is a Crapra XRS 9300. My only recommendation is to run far, far away from any salesman who tries to get you to buy a Crapra. They are, simply put, crap.

As for my Whistler 1730, I got it for $25 at Best Buy to use as a backup, and in the times I've had to use it (mostly when loaning the X50 out to friends for road trip use), it's given me just enough warning to slow from 7-10 over without making it painfully obvious. The Pro-58 and Pro-73 are great budget detectors, and if you can't afford one of the big three, go with the Whistler.

The catch with Whistlers is falsing--they do love to false.

:D :D :D Well maybe, I kind of got used to it, but you should get used to it in an intelligent way. For example if it goes off with a 3 I would wait with my foot ready to push the brakes if it lasted more than 3-4 beeps. :D

If its and x band I would ignore it unless it really started to climb up the signal strentgh indicator. If its a K band just keep a close eye if it goes from one to two then I would start pressing the break. If it ka band I would slow down the minute you hear it go off.

One thing to realize folks is that it might not always be a false. It could be a cop turning the corner from another street and a few houses down out of view. Hence the k alert beep and then it goes away. And example of this was the other day. I got a K band alert and it went away. I figure it was a false I was in a commerical area heading home. Low and behold when turning off the commerical area and onto a few sidestreets I come up to a stop light turn right and just as I look to my left down another street their is a cop. I followed behind him not close but he was popping people with k band around a school zone. Hence the false was not a false it was real. Another situation I had I got a ka band and it was gone I turn right to go home and as I went past are grocery store low and behold was a cop behind the grocery store and he was popping people with ka band. If I didnt treat that as a serious threat I would have gotten a ticket for sure. Yes the whistler does false as does any other radar detector on the market. But never take what appears to be a false lightly. Always know your surroundings know where things should be falsing and not be. If you get a ka band around a x band door opener at a grocery store look in the grocery store parking lot. Your best detector is your eyes.

Budget=Cobra Detectors
Best Bang For The Buck=Whistler

Also by the way whistler I strongly believe in my opinion does not fall in the budget catergory I think newer mid unit would be better. Yes they are very well priced detectors. But their is not a huge performace hit like cobra detectors are. Cobra repersents the budget detector considering its rock bottom price and its very minimal detection at best. As a former owner of a cobra I think any person that has switch from a cobra to a whistler will agree with me on the performance difference between a whistler and a cobra its night and day. Plus the whistler customer repair department difference is simply amazing. If you never own a cobra then commenting on such a difference would be mute. The last cobra I own I think I sold it in a garage sell. For 5 dollars. :P

My 1793 has served me well. I can tell you that I've never receiced a ticket with it. It is ideal in rural areas, where there are fewer sources for falses.

Isnt it amazing how most whistler owners have never gotten a ticket with whistler. I find that kind of interesting. I have own whistler for several years and have as of yet to get a ticket from either laser or radar. I tend to drive 10 to 20 over. I guess that shows that whistler is not some sorry a s s detector that should be called a so called budget or low end detector. Low end my a s s. My whistler has paid for itself within the first few hundred miles. Figure the times you would have got pulled over look at the over the limit rates in your area. And do the math yeap thats right. The detector paid for itself. That and a good can of veil is really all you need. I think the veil guy would be happy with me. With veil I have cops almost go right down to a zero hit before they pick me up with veil. I need to make a aim here sign.

What about the PNI 7500?

I have one and it's good bang for the buck.

For $150, I'd get
the pni - if I'm traveling on the hwy a lot (even a few trips a year) add a
cheap CB
firestick

that's what I have in the car, but a BCT8 and not a cheapie CB anymore (actually the cb is on loan, so the one I actually own is a cheapie!)

better than a v1 or any radar detector alone

Upgrade as need/budget dictate.

Yeah? I was going to buy a 7500 since it was such an attractive package and price, (around a C note). Then I found out it has like a 1 second delay on reporting Ka alerts and has crappy detection overall :x

Then again, my PNI with a cord isn't much better.

STI here we go! :D

After I posted I id a little look around on prices and etc.

I got my PNI 7500 about 2 yrs ago and was decent then. I think more of the whistler stuff has been tested since.

The Pni is still about $30-40 cheaper than the Whistler so for me I'd probably do the same thing - PNI, CB and antenna.

If I didn't do much hwy, I'd put the money into a better detector.

I have had 3 whistlers and returned them all. But here is why, I kept upgrading.....lol

I did return the 1788 cause of the low sound (very low). But I think I would have kept it as a backup if I had the money at the time to buy two of them.

Almost got Veil last yr before my trip up in August, but I couldn't find any testimonials on it.

6 weeks to STRP (rally in PA) - so I may be adding a piece of gear this time but probably by Maine summer.
