View Full Version : What Detector Do You Use?

I've been reading a lot of threads and watching a lot of movies on which of the three main radar detectors is the best, but what I want to know is which one do YOU choose to run in your car?

I personally have chosen the Escort 8500 X50 (Red). I feel it gives the best city and highway protection with the least amount of falsing. Granted, it has it's short commings with the LA SM, but all in All i'm very happy.

Well i'm not going to do the Poll but there should be an Other Section for those that are not fortunate enough to have one of the big 3

I use the RX65 falsy little brother, BEL Vector 995

Good point, I didn't think of that. Roy, would you mind addind an "Other" section to the poll because it won't let me edit it. Thanks :)

I use a Cobra XRS-777 which an e-mail to Cobra confirmed that is is a relabled for Wal-Mart XRS-9700.

So far I like it just fine.

I have more detectors and my opinion is that the "best 4" in Europe are BEL 550/BEL 966/BEL RX65/Valentine1 (in alphabetical order).

Well, I'm using a BEL/Target EVO966RM (it is similar to the American BEL-975).
I like it for its great sensitivity and it is useful when I drive to a country where RD's are banned. Unfortunately City/AutoMute is missing, that's why I'm using RM (motorbike version) without sound but with a brightly flashing indicator light.

T-T, why not start a similar poll for European users? The results could be interesting.

I have the RX65... works for me.

The x50 seems like a better choice IMO.

Its a good idea but I have to gather my infos first. It isn't so easy because here are different countries with different type of radars and different laws. For example in UK there is no Ka band and a few Ku band only, detection is legal. In this case BEL/Escort/V1 should be the best against mobile radars but there are many fixed speed-traps (with loop), that's why they may prefer detector with GPS (Snooper S5 or S6). There are many countries where RD are banned - there a built-in model is needed.
Most of US detectors aren't so efficient here because of the low power output of european radars. Escort or all of Cobra detectors aren't recommended in countries where police is using Ku band radars...

I think that a little bit hard to make a useful poll for EU but I will do it soon.

Currently I use a Cobra XRS-9600. It's not bad so far. It picks up city cops at a good distance (Ka band). The only gripe I have is the POP falsing I get, along w/the Safety radar falsing. It does get annoying at times.

I'm not convinced there is any single "best" detector. I tend to fall into the camp that sez:

V1 best for those long-distance highway cruisers

X50 best for the urban traveler.

X50 best for the urban traveler.I have a V1 and am happy with it. Maybe I'd be happy/happier with a X50 since I do mostly city driving, but I can't be blowing money on more detectors. :) So it's me and my V1. I love the remote display too.

Lot of false alarms,, don't detect until Cop is right on top of you, AND I DO MEAN RIGHT ON TOP OF YOU!!!!

To me, city driving is not a big issue. It's hard (IMO) to justifiy a RD since I would find it rather difficult to speed in cities. I am more concerned on having a good one for the highway. Drive safely and happy motoring.

I live in Europe and drive a Cayenne Turbo. I have owned three V1's and just purchased the newest version with EUROPEAN MODE. All of my friends here that own performance cars have a V1 on the dash. If you try a V1 for a few weeks and get to learn the benefits of the ARROWS you will be won over.

As I post this, over 40% of the people that have voted on the POLL own the V1.

letting everyone know know i now own a bel express 795 $99d unit but i still
have the vector895 i bought the express unit just to see what this radar detector can do i will testing the express 795 for 3 months out in the real world i have seen what the 895 can do and all i can say is has very good range on ka band and k band. plenty of time to slow down. no false alerts
on ka now thats what i like on a radar detector when i was driveing with the v895 for 2 months or a little more only k band false alerts door openners only i guess they are real alerts just not real police radar alerts so no ka false alerts just yo let u all know . this is what i am hopeing for that my bel express 795 will act the same i will keep everyone posted on this unit peace!

I'm a little surprised to see the V1 as the #1 choice - - i figured it would be the X50. Oh, well.

i bought an x50 a few months ago and have had good experiences with it apart from the lack of arrows and its non-stop falsing on PoP mode. I keep my V1 in another car that isn't driven often.

They're both great detectors. Everyone should try each unit and decide which they prefer.

I really like my V995 it does not false as much as people think. This detector is just as good as the Rx 65. Compared the two with a friend of mine he has the Rx 65 the detection range was almost identical he was shocked he thought there would be a big difference of course I did too. I think for those whom cannot afford the Rx 65 and want comparible performance the V995 is the way to go.

is the 8500 just as good as the x50?
i biught the extended warranty for that purpose, but i think it has since expired! the passport sales lady pushed that on me, rude *****, told me that when the newer one came out i would be able to upgrade it! i should check my policy!

V1. i had the x50 as well but the V1 won out because of the upgradablity and the poor quality control of the x50.

Hardware wise, the V1 can't be beat. It's the primitive software that is responsible for the high rate of falses. I assume Mike V is a hardware specialist.
