Yeah but on a Seven you can see the wheels and if you have long hair you better cut it because it could get sucked into the rear wheel and kill you :D
And VR6's fit fine in Mk I Golfs from before VW even knew how to count to six :D

Exactly my point!
Of course those were the 2.8s...I've heard rumblings from insane people (like me) who want to cram a 3.6 into Mk1s, but I don't think it's been attempted yet...FSI in one of those cars might be a nightmare!

Yes.
It isn't so much the problem of shoehorning the engine, it is the problem that when you hit the gas pedal you will have the "Herbie" effect, the whole car in front of the firewall will take off like a rocket but you and the rest of the car will sit there on the side of the road with sparks coming out

That's very true, even the "big turbo" 1.8Ts are just ridiculous...they're only "fast" in a straight quarter mile on wrinkle-wall race slicks...and even then, only relatively so.
However, some of the people interested in doing large (3.2L/3.6L) VR6 swaps are also interested in converting to AWD.

Having a knowledge of the Mk I-II-III Golf AWD in the traditional sense seems impractical but it's been done...
I prefer stick another engine in the back a la Renault 5 Turbo II rally special, I know I saw a Mk II Golf done up like this with a VR6 in the back, but keep one for the front too ;)
Re: Erick - You Should Have Bought This Car (Video Inside)
Yes JDS. That engine sounds awesome.
But didn't VW stick a W12 from a Bently Continental in a concept car once?? That TopGear episode was awesome . . .
YouTube - Top Gear - Volkswagen Golf GTI W12

Nooooo I'm not talking about sh!tty old-school Syncro, I'm talking about aftermarket Subaru/Porsche style viscous couplings or, even better, physics-defying Haldex active mechanical differential 4motion.

Yeah I'm familiar with the idea but it always worries me, I get the feeling that something would ALWAYS be going wrong with a setup like that

Pshhhhh just don't slow down and you won't disrupt the airflow, then you'll stay dry!
