Escort 9500i connecting to cell phones?

(1) Escort has not released any specifications or announced any plausible plans to do anything consumer-level via the USB port. Currently it seems like Jim's figured out how to grab firmware version info over USB but that's nowhere close to using it as a GPS device. EDIT: I took a closer look and it seems like the 9500i comes up as a HID-compliant device and Jim's simply executing standard HID property queries against the device. It doesn't get us any closer to actually communicating with the unit.

(2) There is no evidence that the GPS module is even accessible over the USB, though we have no idea what the USB port is hooked up to. To passthru the GPS would require modification of the 9500i's firmware also, which is impossible without Escort's encryption key.

(3) Your phone most likely does not have USB on the go support or ways of loading on an external GPS device to its operating system via its mini-USB port.


Bottom line: It's not possible. Not now, probably not ever.

I looked at "Jim's Software" as well and determined there wasn't anything more that you could do a while back by trying to go that route. I think the closest you would get is if you purchase the development kit for the chip holding the software in the 9500i, the development kit alone isn't free its like $120 and still no guarantee you'd get any further once you had it, since the software in it is likely encrypted.

You're not going to be able to use the GPS in the 9500i for GPS services in your cell phone, your phone would need software and maps capable of communicating with the 9500i. Some of the PDA type phones running Windows Mobile OS will allow you to plug in a GPS antenna to the USB port, but it also requires software that comes with the GPS module and with my phone through Verizon they want an additional $10 a month fee to use it because it also still primarily runs off cell towers for some stupid reason.

You're better off just getting a dedicated GPS navigation system, I tried the cell phone version of this for 2 months, it was absolute crap, and not only did it only work when in range of a cell tower, it also had to be in range of their wireless broadband service or it would drop your directions cold on you right in the middle of your travels.

I think what CJ was referring to was using the PDA and the Windows Mobile OS just to access the features in the 9500i once Escort gets us our software. That plan isn't going to work either, but it would have been a good idea. Windows Mobile will not run regular Windows apps, the file size alone is too huge to be able to load on the Windows Mobile OS. Windows Mobile isn't really "Windows" like you are familiar with, its just a Java App painted to kind of look like Windows. Escort would have to release software specifically written to run on Windows Mobile, and I seriously doubt they'll do that, it'll likely just be the usual Vista,XP,2000 stuff.
