Unhappy Need Key Code for used 9500ix

I bought a used 9500ix off of a guy on craigslist. It came with just the radar detector, smartcord and suction mount. I went to EscortRadar.com and purchased a 3 year subscription for updates. I do not have a key code for this detector, so I called Escort to get one from them and they say they can't help me because I don't know the original owner that first registered the detector with them. They want the original owner to call them and tell them that I purchased it from him. The problem is, the guy I bought it from said he does not know the original owners name because he bought it used at some kind of sale where they don't know the original owners name. I explained this to EscortRadar.com over the phone and they will not do anything for me. I even asked if they would get a hold of the original owner and of course, they said no.

Am I totally screwed here? Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Steve.

I guess I was hoping someone here might know somebody I could email at Escort that might understand my situation and would help me out. The thing that really bugs me is I love this radar detector. I've used it for a few days now in my work truck and was planning on buying a brand new one of them at Best Buy for my personal vehicle, but now, I am rethinking that. I might just sell this one and go with a new Valentine. In this economy, I can't believe they would choose to loose a prospective customer over such a trivial issue.

Maybe it has been reported to Escort as stolen.

I gave Escort the serial number and they did not say it was reported stolen. I would think if it was reported as stolen they would have said something about it. Thats why I can't understand why they won't issue me a new Key Code.

If you do buy a brand new one for your personal vehicle, you will then have the key code you need. Don't believe anyone who tells you that you need to buy a separate subscription for each detector, cuz you don't.

I've seen some LCD downloads on some torrent sites too ... but obviously I can give you no more information than that.

I don't know though ... the whole story sounds fishy to me. Bought it from a guy who bought it from a guy. Red flag.

The guy I bought it from was the one who told me about how the whole update deal works. He thought all you had to do was buy a subscription, and Escort would supply a key code and subscription id. He was half right.

I would think if he was worried about it being stolen property, he would have removed the serial number or something. Then I would agree with you on the "red flag" thing. The seller was the one who told me where the serial number was on the unit to give to Escort. He sure did niot seem to be worried about it being stolen at all.

So, are you saying anyones key code for a 9500ix will work with my unit? Aren't the serial number and the key code linked together somehow? Would I just register the used radar detector with the same key code I get with the new radar detector I was going to buy?

    THIS IS JUST SPECULATION;

I would think you could buy a new 9500ci and use that keycode and then return the unit -- of course there'd be a restocking fee if you use BestBuy. In any event, then you could buy ANOTHER 9500ci unopened and have a 2nd key code for your personal vehicle's detector. Just speculation though, and I do not advocate this, nor am I responsible for your actions.

I'm saying the location database file that you download works in any 9500ix, so if you bought a new detector you would be able to register that one, download the updates, and use it in both your 9500ix's. Additionally, if you knew some other place to get the downloads, those would work too. That would be WRONG though.

If Escort are going to be dicks about it, I might even go to Best Buy, buy a new one, register it and then return it the next day. They might eventually cancel your registration that way though.

Another option would be to swap the one you just bought with a brand new one. You know you can unscrew the case (which has the Serial # on it) and swap out the insides . That would be EVIL though. Don't do it.

    Company's should always play nice.

Thats what sucks. I wanted to do the right thing, so I ordered the 3 yr. subscription like I am supposed to. I could have done any of the suggestions that have been given here and not bought anything from them, but I didn't do that. I feel I am being punished for doing the right thing. I AM GETTING SCREWED!!!!!!!!! LOL

Thanks for all the help guys!!!

    Any other suggestions???
