I read on the Escort site that the 8500 model was not upgradable however the x50 model was. This was right off their website a few months ago.

I remember the ads for the original 8500 pretty clearly, "upgradable to all future threats".

Speed measuring devices continue to improve through the use of new technology. Passport 8500's innovative design allows the on-board microprocessor to be re-programmed to detect new radar and laser units. While other manufacturers' models become obsolete, the Passport 8500 can be upgraded to protect you against the latest threats.
I think the public's perception of ESCORT's "Upgrade" talk is a little different from what ESCORT intended. I am sure ESCORT meant that if a new band in the radar spectrum or a new wavelength in lidar, the 8500 would be availible to upgrade to it. Like Ku for example. Or the POP upgrade. But not for a performance upgrade like the X50.
Well I'd say if the detector needs updated then lets challange them to what they claim they will do. If they say it can be done then they should do it. Otherwise it's a false AD. However the way to get around this   is to jack up the price of upgrading the detector close to the price of a new one. I may be wrong, but I'm in sales, this could be their plan.
