I hardwired mine with no problem to the convertable power circuit. Since I drive a coupe, it just made sense to do it that way  Radar detector turns off when the car turns off and turns on when car turns on. I installed the oem fog lamp switch which overrides that at any time (for shopping centers, buisness routes and such).
I'm still not sure which side of the fuse recepticle I tapped was hot (and therefore are not sure if the fuse is in-line or not, but I'm not worried about an x50 causing a fire.... get real.

It is easy to test it out...just take the fuse out and use a multimeter(or you could use the wiring to your detector, although that isn't as good of an idea) to see which side of the fuse gives you power and which doesn't.
By the way, my hardwiring job is working out great. My car's cigarette lighter isn't switched, so this allows it to cut off on its own when I cut off the car. It also gets rid of the annoying cord going from under the dash up to the rear-view mirror, so it is much harder to spot the detector if you aren't actively looking for it.
