Default Where to place the shifters...

I have been driving with the Escort 8500 X50 for quite some time now and love the performance. I just bought a new body style Chevy Silverado and would like to have a remote installed detector/shifter setup. I'm looking at the Escort SR7 with Shifters, but here is my conundrum.

One shop installer I went to said he would install the radar detector and shifters behind the grill (for a stealth look). He said they could see through anything but metal... Well, knowing what I know about lasers, the shifters would be virtually useless behind the grill and what good is a stealth system if it doesn't work.

The next shop installer I spoke with said he would put the shifters down low on either side of the license plate for best performance and the radar detector could be behind the grill (since the grill is plastic). My concern about this location is the rather large headlights on this truck make a great target for the laser gun, and if the shifters are down low, will they be effective? See picture below: The installer's suggested location for the shifters are yellow.

I was personally thinking of having a custom shop cut out pieces of the lower grill and spacing the shifters between the license plate and headlights above the grill. In the picture below, the locations I had in mind are red. The white block is the approximate location of the license plate.

Sorry for the long post, but this is a rather expensive venture and I just want to make sure it is as effective as possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Chris

If your set on the SR7 then In my opinion I would forget about stealth and place them in front of the grill by the headlights. Also put the rear lens up front down by the license plate.

Your rig is big and flat. Please tell me it's not white or silver too?
I like the integrated display of the SR7(X) configuration especially with the external speaker mounted right by my ear but have you looked at all the options?

So, do you know if you can add more shifters by just plugging in more rj11-type splitters? Out of the box, both shifters plug into a splitter (combiner) and that plugs into the controller. Can you just get a three-way splitter and plug more in - thus, being able to keep the rear shifter?

BTW, it's black, but right now the grill is chrome (soon to be black also).

Awesome color scheme. that will work really well.
Yeah, you can add splitters but I wouldn't go hog wild with them. You might e-mail them and ask how many the SR7 can support.

I checked with Escort to see how many shifters I could add to the SR7 and below is their reply. Not sure if they just want me to spend more money or if it would really harm the unit. The other thing is, if I add the ZR3, would I have two control modules, or would it plug into the SR7 controller?

"The SR7's interface is designed to handle the current drawn for three shifters. If more than three shifters are hooked up to the SR7, the interface could be damaged because the currrent pull through the interface would be too much. The only way to add more shifters would be to purchase the ZR3 which would give you an extra interface."

    Thanks,

    Chris

    That reply makes sense.

Yes the ZR3 plugs right into the SR7 interface. If you go with the SR7(X) then I strongly suggest the external speaker option if you ever listen to music in your car. I think all escort products alerts are too low.

Make sure all the shifter heads have a clear view of the Road ahead...And to increase radar performance maybe have a shop come up with a mount for the radar antenna to be mounted inside the cab high. Like behind or above the rearveiw

Mount the to front heads in the top grill section each next to the headlights and put the rear jamming head on top of the front licence plate

that's a tough one to protect.
the red, with the rear on above the front plate would be about as good as you'll get.

agreed on the external speaker. My SR7's even at full volume aren't very loud, so i use the external speaker for the front one and it works great.

if you have room without it being obvious, i'd install it inside, above the RVM.

this will give you the best performance, over a lower, slightly blocked install.

Yeah well I remember you mentioning that and if I ever get a nice car I think i might go with that idea. (especially if Escort makes a remote version of the 9500i) I love stealth and clean installs...I wanna see how your antenna is mounted
