I have been driving with the Escort 8500 X50 for quite some time now and love the performance. I just bought a new body style Chevy Silverado and would like to have a remote installed detector/shifter setup. I'm looking at the Escort SR7 with Shifters, but here is my conundrum.
One shop installer I went to said he would install the radar detector and shifters behind the grill (for a stealth look). He said they could see through anything but metal... Well, knowing what I know about lasers, the shifters would be virtually useless behind the grill and what good is a stealth system if it doesn't work.
The next shop installer I spoke with said he would put the shifters down low on either side of the license plate for best performance and the radar detector could be behind the grill (since the grill is plastic). My concern about this location is the rather large headlights on this truck make a great target for the laser gun, and if the shifters are down low, will they be effective? See picture below: The installer's suggested location for the shifters are yellow.
I was personally thinking of having a custom shop cut out pieces of the lower grill and spacing the shifters between the license plate and headlights above the grill. In the picture below, the locations I had in mind are red. The white block is the approximate location of the license plate.
Sorry for the long post, but this is a rather expensive venture and I just want to make sure it is as effective as possible.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Chris
