Front license plates in Texas, what gives?

My buddy drives a Chevy Suburban - great condition, no glaring modifications. Typical family-vehicle where we are. Usually clean and well-kept.

He's run through even the City of Cleveland and Cleveland Heights for nearly 5 years now, without his front plate. No one even bats an eye at him, much less have pulled him over for this obvious violation.

A friend of ours, a young African American female in our Ph.D. program, while out with some of her friends, got pulled-over for a front-plate violation. She was in an older black Nissan 240SX, with tinted windows. Fits a profile.

Same with many of my friends in our local Subaru club - their variously modified WRXs and STis/STIs all have been routinely stopped for either front-plate or tint violations.

You drive a certain vehicle, you'll have to pay for it somehow. :)

Yeah I have to install it. I don't think I'll have to drill holes. I'll use 3M tape but it will still crap the paint up. I would rather not give them a reason to stop me.

On a related note (not that I participate or condone any of this behavior) but one of my co-workers just told me he got pulled over outside of Dallas last year for no front plate. Brand new 05 GTO and He didn't want to drill holes in his front end either. But this time he had a freind with an open beer and a couple of joints in his pocket. Luckily the LEO missed the beer and the joints but my bud said when he got home he couldn't get that plate on fast enough.

ELVATO and other brothers/sisters thinking about using the 3M Auto Trim/Mo(u)lding tape to mount the front plate.....

I'm honestly not sure how well this will work, considering the wind forces involved at higher speeds.

I would imagine that if the plate was *completely* supported on its back-side, it would be OK, but if the plate is "free-dangling" over a significant portion of its "height," the wind at-speed could potentially rip it clean off the tape.

That tape is strong, but I honestly don't know...... :?: :oops:

I don't drive the Starla everyday. I'll give it a good wash then tape the plate bracket to the nose and let it sit for a week. That should give it a chance to keep a good seal. Then I'll put on a plate cover and veil it.

Up here you got to have the fronts on. I know some people just throw it up on their dash against the windsheild, and when pulled over just told the leo he was waiting for the brackets to come from the US since the ground kit didnt come with them when he got it.

For me I would just have them on since I dont want to even give them a reason to pull me over, since I seem to get in **** with the law enough as it is.

Your car says to the popo's that you have more $$ than him, drive faster than him, get more women than him, etc......therefor you can afford to pay more tickets than him. Come on Eric you're one of us forum boys, and you know that they aim at the front plate; hell if I was a 5-0 I'd pull your a$$ over too!!

yes they usually do aim for the plates, but in all seriousness they'll move on to a different target, a cop probably isnt willing to pull you over for no plate if youre not speeding or something like that, i'll bet its too much BS paperwork to deal with for a small fry offense, all he has to do is shoot at the light if le's not getting anything from the plate (or in this case where the plate should be)

Nothing can obstruct the plate. No covers, alterations, colored lights etc. Even mud on the plate is PC for a traffic stop.

i drive an 02 trans am and it looks badass w/ out the license plate, cuz it has the awesome plate cover w/ the bird on it

when i got stopped for speeding he also hit me for no plate
my plate cover snaps right off and my plate is mounted behind it, so i got that dismissed

the plate is now on my air damn which isnt visible from 10 ft, but is from farther back, but i still got a warning for obstructed plate

tx does seem to enjoy stoppin for no front plates though
