Fritter-Tuesday

There are some violations that we don't nessesarily cite for but we can use for stops to investigate something else.

Let's say that I am patrolling a drug area and I spy a car that I haven't seen before. I run the plate and the address is from another part of the city. I make the block and notice that there is no front plate.

I now have a legal stop on the vehicle. From there, depending on how the stop progresses I start to find ways that I can get into the car by PC or permission. I cannot tell you how many drunks, drugs, guns and warrants I have found from a stop similar to that.

Another one is "failure to signal intent from the curb" when folks pull away from the curb after buying crack or picking up a prostitute.

It is safe to say that the transportation code is packed with violations. I could follow someone, anyone, for 5 minutes and get a violation.

That is why we have descretion.

Virtually all of my law-enforcement friends say, to a man, how many bigger fish they've caught, thanks to these simple traffic stops.

I have a lot of late night press checks in my business so it's not unusual for me to be driving around at 2-3 a.m. I've been pulled over many times for no-front-plate which was obviously a "drunk" check.

same here i got one of those 2 weeks ago on hwy 71.
it was around 1:30am heading to galveston. i was speeding a little somewhere around 5-7 over the PSL and he stopped me and gave me a test but i dont drink.
i though he was going to give me a warning and tell me to keep it down to the speed limit but he saw my v1 and i think thats the reason i got the ticket.

fritter if someone that you pulled over has a radar do you give him a ticket or do you give him a warning?

:eek: you got tested? by DPS or Galveston County? I've been stopped by DPS once and Galveston County two times on a drunk check but they never tested. Just asked were I was coming from and where I was going then let me go. Frankly it was a little draconian for Texas cops but at 2:30 a.m. I'll give them a pass. You should see some of the stuff I've seen at 3 a.m. on the roads.

Like a fist fight in the middle of the freeway. wish I had been running video for that one. I've actually seen two of these. Cars parked on the side of the road and the drivers are wailing at each other in lane 1.

yea he gave me the 'follow the tip of the pen with your eyes only" test....it was DPS but I should of also mentioned that he said the car smelled like alcohol one of my roomates who was sitting in the back seat had drank 2 beers before we headed out.

i really dont remember smelling like alcohol i guess he just got suspicious since he saw 3 guys at 1:30 am.

LOL! It's embarrassing to get stopped for a DUI test when you don't even drink! I been there before. It's embarrassing because you know your driving had to be particularly crappy while sober to get you stopped! I got tagged for DUI once when I was just falling asleep at the wheel. I've pulled over quite a few like that too. Amazing how you can be almost 100 percent sure the guy is drunk, and they turn out to just be tired.

You can also get the test for stopping at flashing yellow lights.

lol yea i was like what the...he said he pulled me over due to speeding and then he told me that he told me to get out since he smelled alcohol in teh car when he asked me if i was drinking and i told him no I dont drink then he said oh so your the designated driver i was like yes sir and still proceeded to give me the test.


my roomate said that he saw my v1 concealed display and was looking for hte radar detector then he found it by the rv mirror.

Yeah, DDs get tested if they're stopped. It's pretty stupid but every DD we've had has mixed in a beer or two unless they were complete non-drinkers.

When I was younger there was no such thing as a DD but we would usually go kind of a rock/paper/scissors thing and the loser could still drink but had to keep relatively sober enough to drive. Of course back then drunk drivers were crashing into schoolbuses every day so that didn't last long.

I was the loser in the rock/paper/scissors game and drove back to our dorm and right into a speedtrap at Elgin. It turned out I had a traffic warrant so the cop took me in custody. Then he gave each of my buddies a roadside test, gave my keys to most sober and kicked them loose.
