SF Police Crack Down On Speeding
Sioux Falls police are putting extra officers on the road this weekend in an effort to slow drivers down.
Greg Slaven has been a police officer in Sioux Falls for 10 years. If there's anything his time on the force has taught him, it’s that it's not hard to catch people who are speeding.
Slaven said, “As far as finding speeders, it's going great. There are a lot of them out here.”
Slaven says since he started working as an officer in Sioux Falls, the number of people he's seen pushing the speed limit on the city's streets has increased.
“Things get spread out. People are going to be in a bigger hurry to get to their places of destination,” said Slaven.
The intersection at 57th and Louise is one of the areas that Sioux Falls police caught the most speeders. KELOLAND News spent one hour with officers there, and police were constantly busy.
“People will tend to remember that there were a lot of police cars, a lot of officers in one area,” said Slaven.
Police are hoping the speeding saturation does more than issue a lot of tickets. They hope drivers will start to get the message about the importance of slowing down.
In the six hours of the speed enforcement, Sioux Falls police issued 155 tickets. Ninety-eight of those were for speeding. The highest speed clocked was someone going 54 in a 30 miler per hour zone.
