I would pick the 8500, but only if you can verify that is in excellent condition. I would be hesitant to buy a used radar detector unless it was from someone I knew for sure they took care of it. Have you thought about the Bel 995? Or a Bel RX55? Roy's site has those for a good price.
I would have to say get the original 8500. But keep in mind the cobra xrs 9600 ( same thing as the 9700 only no voice) is much cheaper
