Sad Day for Me and my escort 8500 x50

driving down the freeway in california. on 680.. going 80.. seen a cop with a radar slowed down fast. he got behind me and pulled me over, clocked me at 78mph @ 800ft. sad part is my 300dollar investment the escort 8500 x50.. didnt go off once. even after he clocked me... ive only had it for maybe 6months now? :-/ it use to tell me here and there when cops were sitting htere tagging people. but not this time around.. so thumbs down for escort.. yay for the aprox 300 dollar ticket..... :oops:

Uh, that sounds like laser. Don't see how the X50 failed you.

Don't despair. At only 800 to 1200 feet, the spread on laser is only a couple of inches at the most. If it was a very dry day with very low humidity, then laser scatter would have been almost nonexistent. No dash mounted radar detector would have been able to detect the laser if the officer was holding the laser gun really steady at that close range.

This is why most people here say that if you get a laser alert on your radar detector, then you might as well plan on pulling over since it isn't very often that you will pick up laser scatter off of a car which is ahead of you.

frog: sorry about your luck but the officer had really good discipline and probably just hit your front plate. the only detector that is going to go off for this is the V1. you need to journey off to the laser jammer section there is a whole new world to discover.

Even with a V1, it's not a sure-thing, particularly if the unit is high-mounted - yes, this is from Mike Valentine's own admission, on the "Laser" page on their official website (and yes, he also cites preference for the high-mount).

I agree, however, that for laser, a good active jammer is the only defense.

But more in the vein of the original post of this thread, these detectors are just tools - you *must* know how to properly use them, and that includes intimate knowledge of both their strengths *and* their weaknesses.

It seems that in this case, frog1699, you were perhaps just a little over-confident in the ability of your detector (or any detector) to warn to laser traps.

Sadly, this must be chalked-up to "lesson learned," and cannot really be blamed on the instrument/tool itself.
