Just got my 955 and I'm already getting an error message

Well I just bought a Vector 955 yesterday and as soon as I got it. I got this wierd annoying error message while I was trying to mount it. It kept beeping with an arrow pointing up and ramping up and then arrow pointing down and ramping up again. It does this continually while the beep gets louder and louder then it goes down again. It's very annoying, I don't think it's normal because because my friend has a 955 and his never did this. Pressing any of the buttons won't make it stop either, you have to unplug it and plug it back in. Once I plug it back in, it goes back to normal again.
Well today it happened again so I was wondering what you guys think I should do? Should I return it and exchange it for another one.

Welcome to the board. What you are experiencing is typical BEL quality or lack there of! Take it back and exchange it man. :wink:

Hmm. That's the volume adjustment sequence. :lol: Typically you do that by pushing and holding the big space bar-looking button closest to the front. It's sorta like a push button dimmer light. You're supposed to push it and hold it until you get the desired volume.

Did you push down and squeeze on this part of the detector while you were mounting it?

You may also have jammed it or something. Try pushing it a few times then pushing it and holding a few times and see if it clears up first. No need to return it IF nothing's wrong.

You know what, I did press the top a little while trying to bend the bracket so I can get the right angle. That's when this started to happen. I just went outside and none of the buttons even work. I took it off, shook it and it worked fine. Then I unplugged it again and pressed and released the buttons to see if they were jammed, they seemed fine but when I plugged it back in. It did the volume ramp up and down again. I'm def taking it back and exchanging it for a new one.

It's kinda wierd because the buttons and the housing seem very solid and now it's already messing up :(

Just be careful when adjusting next time. Your not supposed to adjust the bracket with the detector on it. I know, that seems silly, but many companies give that warning.... The 955 is not a bad detector at all.

I just found something else. I have the hardwire kit on my car and once I use that on my 955, I can turn it off but I can't turn it back on. No matter how many times I press the power on button. I used the cigarette lighter plug in and it works normally. Could my hardwire have a lose connection? Also when I turn the car off, it says LOW VOLTAGE for a brief second before it turns off. I haven't tried it yet using the cigarette plug that it came with.

The micro switch under the power button has gotten jammed -- probably from too much force when you were trying to adjust the bracket. The button on the hardwire kit is only for adjusting the volume or for muting alerts. Its not supposed to be able to power off the RD or power it back on. You likely are getting the very brief low voltage message because the relay for your cigarette lighter or whichever fuse your hardwire kit is tapped into takes a second to disengage when you kill the ignition. Since the relay doesn't kill power instantly when you kill your ignition, there is a slight possibility of a voltage spike from the car's electrical system damaging any electronics you have hooked up. Be safe and always power off your radar detector before killing the car's ignition.

HeHe yeah, I love my Bel, I dont think Bel has LACK of quality, my 955 is a solid unit. Any electronic will have problems.

+2, and +3 just ignore the comment from the typical 5000postwhore...


you shouldnt have to bend the mount. there is like 4 notches for adjustment and the detector IS Supposed to touch the windshield.
i think some peopledont understand that and try bending the bracket to get it to go up without it resting on the windshield which allows it to bounce

read the manual.

also, what your getting is Not an error message, it is your buttons somehow got jammed, i would exchnge it 4 another one.
