Beltronics RX55 or Whistler Pro-78

I noticed that Beltronics discontinued the RX55 and prices are dropping from the $229.95 price. Bestradardetectors.net has them for $169.95 now RadarBusters has not dropped the price yet and I have even seen some on ebay new for $139.95. The Pro-78's are at the same price so which is better?. I know the Bel 955 and Pro-78 are very comparable but is the RX55 supposed to be a step up? I need a decent detector for a friend and I was going to do another Pro-78 but just noticed the drop on the RX55.. Tell me which is better?

Rx55 is a step down. It uses an older less senstive antenna/horn setup, similar to the Solo2, unlike the M4 antenna/horn on the RX65 and Vector series.

Get the Pro78--the newest version REV C, is a good performer for the price!!

I have a Pro-78 that I use sometimes but I do not really like it compared to my V1 I use on the highway and my RX65 I use for normal use. The sounds tend to be annoying to me and it feels cheaply made. I was hoping the RX55 would perform similar to the RX65. You would still get the Pro-78 over the V955?

Just buy the Bel Vector 955. Circuit City has it for $149.99. I know for you its a toss up between the Beltronics RX55 or Whistler Pro-78. But you might as well get a detector that Decent at best, instead of buying one that will alert you right on top of a Leo.

Dude you are comparing a Mustang to a Ferarri.....

The 78 is a great detector but it can't be compared to a V1.....it's not fair to Whistler.....

Why not finish my sentense.... I compared my Pro-78 to my V1 and RX65. Pro-78 when released was supposed to offer performance close to the Escort & Bel units.. Its not close to the performance of the RX65 which is why I considered the RX55 for a gift for my friend... He's a good guy but I am not shelling out $200+ for a gift.

I had a 65 and don't consider it a good detector is why I left that part out.
