When the police take away your RD, what happens to it? In Va I know it eventually is returned. But everywhere else, what happens to the unit? I am sure they don't just leave them on a shelf... maybe I should call up the SQ and OPP and sell "Quality Pre-Owned" detectors in the US, maybe on ebay? :)
in my old town in NB they made you crush the detector , Ie: roll over it with your car :?

I bought an awesome V1 off of ebay....it has ever went off.......should there be red on the front when powered up? if so I never seen it. What is your addy and ill send it your way to be tested.

In Ontario, the detector is actually kept as evidence until the conviction. The units are held at the specific detachment in an "evidence locker" or some other type of safe-keeping.
Technically, if the police were to confiscate your detector and you were found not guilty, they would have to give it back. If for some other reason they destroyed it before the court date, (1) you would win the case as they would not have the detector to show as evidence in court and (2) they (the Crown) would have to compensate you for your destroyed detector.
