Can the STi-R mute my stereo on alert?
I just received and installed my new STi-R unit today and I had heard of some people wiring it to their aftermarket stereo systems to take advantage of the telephone muting features...
So, my question is how do you go about doing that?
I have a Clarion 825 deck which has a Brown wire labeled "Telephone Mute". When I ground it out the deck mutes and displays "Telephone in use"... Looks promising but I have no idea how to proceed... Any ideas?

OH MAN I THINK MY DECK HAS THAT TOO!!! THIS WILL BE AN AWESOME SET UP IF I CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT FOR THIS:

EDIT: Bleh, my deck doesn't have it :(
Re: Can the STi-R mute my stereo on alert?
nope..no idea, dont think it has this feature. I know the LPP has a seperate wire for this but the STi doesnt.
Id say no.
Re: Can the STi-R mute my stereo on alert?
Yeah, I'm aware there's no specific wire on the STi-R for this, but I was hoping someone could point me towards a specific type of relay or something I could put in line with the speaker or something along that route.
To be honest, the speaker on the STi-R is so insanely loud it could easily compete with all 2000 watts of stereo in the car, but it would still be a handy feature.... (I wonder if the cops would catch on that every time they shoot the radar gun the thumping bass stops for 3 seconds?)
:P
Re: Can the STi-R mute my stereo on alert?
It seems that tying into the alert LED wiring would be the way to do it. Perhaps a resistor and an appropriate very small capacitor tied into the wire which makes the alert LED flash, and then this R-C combo tied to a transistor which is used to ground the wire of the car stereo would do it. The idea for the simple R-C circuit is to keep the car stereo muted for 1 second between pulses of the alert LED (assuming that the alert LED flashes).
I haven't plugged in my 9500ci's alert LED. But I will and then figure out a simple and safe circuit to mute a car stereo for car stereos which have a mute lead. Heck, it might even be easier to put this mute circuit inside the STi-R's remote speaker box and then install a small jack on the side of the speaker box where you then plug in the mute lead from your car stereo.
Just a thought. Maybe somebody else will take my idea and beat me to it.
Re: Can the STi-R mute my stereo on alert?
I had thought of using the LED, but from what I've heard from others (I haven't tested myself, should have last night when it was all neatly apart) the LED stays lit when the unit is on, and blinks on alert.. not an ideal situation.
I'll give the LED a try in a day or so (unless someone can confirm before me) and I'll post what it does.

It's bi-color LED tho and uses 3 wires, so you'd only hook up the ground and the wire that turns positive on alert (the other wire stays positive always until alert) so if you wired it up w/ the wire that turns positive on alert it would only mute the stereo when there was an alert. I have the pinout for the bi-color LED if you want to do this
Re: Can the STi-R mute my stereo on alert?
it prob sends down +5v so u could try it..

Yes, it's about 2.5-5V that's what the led is rated for
