So I called the police and asked what model radar/LIDAR they used
I called the non-emergency line, was polite, and asked to speak to somebody about what models they used for traffic enforcement. After some phone tag, an officer called me back. He was very helpful and named off the different radar/LIDAR models they used.
It's added to the big thread on radar bands by town. But I was wondering. Since we have the Wiki engine in use for RD information, using the Wiki model for radar bands sounds like the perfect match.

Hey, its very nice the police agency (officer) was willing to give you such information, without much hassle it seems. Very professional. I think if your local PD holds that sort of value out on the streets too, its just one example of a department that knows what it is doing.
Very cool indeed, most PD departments would hassle someone for wasting their time and such... sounds like he was understanding and cooperative!

I was thinking asking a officer in person when he was sitting in his car but I don't think I could ever call a station :p

I recently did this with the Uk police
using the Freedom of Information .
they have to responde to you with in 21 days

I can't believe they told you that. Good job.
I've always been tempted to call the local police and tell them I'm trying to "program" my radar detector and that I needed to know the types of equipment they used.
Never had the stones to do it though.

Call them! They can't arrest you for asking. And actually, most departments and officers are quite forthcoming with such information. After all, they don't think your detectors and jammers work anyhow, lol. If it's a big department, ask to speak to a traffic division supervisor. If it's a tiny little town, just about anyone besides the dispatcher/call taker can answer, since most officers use the equipment (in large departments, usually only the traffic division uses them, not the patrol officers).

Most LEO's are just as proud of the tools they use as we are.

You're absolutely right. And, as a side note, that is one of the more significant contributory factors to accidental shootings of police officers. One of the biggest benefits of departments issuing standard weapons (as opposed to officers getting to choose their own), is that there is much less showing off of weapons, and many fewer accidental shootings.

It is a shame that the vast majority of departments have chosen the wrong weapon.
They need to train the officer up to the equipment, not bring the level of the weapon down to the officers training level.
