Would a r/d have helped?

I’ve been lurking on these boards for a while trying to figure out the best r/d for me…I believe it’s the 9500. I drive 130 miles round trip per day so I see alot of cops!

But now I have a reason to purchase one…got busted doing over 100 in a 65. I was on the Hardy toll rd…three lanes, no traffic, no cops in sight…and I was looking hard…next thing I know leo is behind me!

Before I drove off I asked him where he was…he was located at the on ramp before the concrete barrier ended…long story short it would be impossible to see him until he was behind you…he told me he was shooting radar (I would have thought lidar).

Would a good radar detector have picked up his radar before I got hit considering he was shooting in the same direction I was traveling?

Sorry for all the questions on my first post but I do appreciate any input…especially from ericonphoenix…believe he’s a Houstonian and I’ve watched all his vids!

Impossible to say for sure... if he was using select instant-on it may not have helped. If it was constant-on it most likely would have.



Never speed at those speeds without a rabbit... even with an RD. If he was selective with the instant-on use (as stated above) and you have no one in front of you to shoot... once he shoots you... even if the RD alerts: You are toast... especially at those speeds.


One thing is for certain: It couldn't hurt, but an RD cannot save you from everything including yourself. At those speeds in a sparsely populated road... 100MPH is a 'sign' asking to be tagged.

It depends. If he was using I/O (instant on) and hit you as soon as he saw you then a rd probably would not have helped if you were the only car on the road. If he happened to i/o a car ahead of you and you were close enough, maybe it would have alerted you enough to either reduce the speed he got you at or avoid it all together.

Now if he had c/o, then yes, it probably would have helped, but you never know as their are a lot of variables there too. I had some close encounters with c/o and wasn't going that fast so it gave me enough time to slow down. Had I been going even 15mph faster, I probably would have been caught but at a lesser speed.

Never a good idea to go 100+ when you are the only car on the road, even with a rd as i/o can be deadly.

As for the best RD, depends. Do you drive city or highway? Most like the 9500 for city driving, and the V1 for highway. I live in a rural area and the V1 does fine on all the back/town roads and is fantastic on the highway.

If I was regularly traveling at speeds close to 100 I would want the 9500ci or the STI-r and a 4 head LI laser jammer. The remote mount detectors are more sensative and best at sniffing out a scenario like to described. A system like that is going to set you back some serious cash, but so is that speeding ticket you just got.

If you are going to go with a windshield mount detector then the only thing for you is a V1. You need the extra sensativity at those speeds and you will just have to put up with the false alerts in an urban environment.

CHP uses this tactic all the time and 99% of the time it's C/O. A cheap RD might not have saved you, but a good one surely would have saved you if it was C/O. We're all just guessing whether it was C/O or I/O. I'd be willing to bet that the Escort 9500ci would have saved you whichever it was. My 9500ci gets amazing range on these types of encounters.

Well if you play you have to pay....I always laugh when people say they dont need a radar detector or similar device because they scan the roads. Well we dont have 360 deg detection of all the 12 bands (that was in pun and not to be taken seriously) and they think they can spot a hidden cop. I believe it would have helped unless there was no drivers to target and was waiting for a unaware victim w/o a RD or LJ.

Like others have said, if he was shooting others cars you would of had a fighting chance. More importantly, there are many aspects to using a radar detector besides it going off. An experienced radar user uses a multi prong approach to avoid getting caught.

I travel at 75-90 mph about 35% of my daily commute...and always in a safe manner.

I've been debating between getting the 9500ix and install the zr4 to save a few bucks or do the ci. So the ci is that much better huh?

One question though...does the ci have a rear detector on it...i know the windshield mount does but was curious if the ci would pick up radar from the rear.

I'm a member on another board and cant get any input on a installer in Houston? Does anybody have suggestions??

My 9500ci picks up rear radar as well as my V1, which is remarkable if you consider that the V1 has a rear facing radar antenna and my 9500ci is mounted with the entire car between it and the radar source. Both my V1 and 9500ci detect this LEO's radar for about 2 miles after I passed him.

I was wondering if the 9500ci was worth the investment myself. It took one day with it to convince me I made a great decision.
