V1, broken?

Hi, first time poster..

I have a V1 1.8 3.872

I live in los angeles,

driving on the 405 and 101 I get little blips of K (1~2 dots signal strength then it goes away) does this a lot...

sometimes the K will ramp up to 4-6dots, and then disappear, and immediately come back at 4 and drop to 1..

sometimes I'll get KA up to 3 or 4, and i never see the cop. Other times it'll go full and I see him with someone already pulled over.

I seem to get a ton of false Lasers..


Pop is on..
X is off.

any suggestions?

Today I had my first J out... still don't understand this?

Wow! A lot to learn. False alerts are everywhere in LA. Using the V1, you're going to have to learn where the false alerts are and memorize them. They are K and X for the most part.

Laser false alerts are usually caused by high-end imports cars running LCC(laser guided cruise control) systems. V1 has the best laser sensitivity on the market. That's both good, because it gives you a slight chance at detecting someone around you getting hit by laser and bad, because it gives the user false alerts galore.

A J-out is your V1 telling you that it has detected another RD. Turning pop off will relieve the vast majority of these.

CHP uses only Ka and laser, so when you are on the freeway, that's what you're looking for. Locals don't run radar on the freeway very often, but there are no laws preventing this, so it is possible.

Your local PD can run anything from K, to Ka, to laser. You'll have to figure that out on your own.

So what exactly is POP, and what is the benefit of having it on if all it does is detect other radar detectors?

I've heard everything from it being a 'type of laser' that isn't accurate enough for them to use and must be followed up with a Ka or K gun reading, to it is just for detecting other RD's..

If you could provide any help as to being able to understand what/when a real threat is detected that'd be awesome.

for instance, is a door ever gonna ramp up past 1~4 unless you're right in the parking lot?

Pop is a short burst of radar, either 16ms or 67ms long. Only one radar manufacturer has pop-capable guns and they aren't very popular. I've never seen pop-capable radar in LA. The closest places that I know have pop-capable radar are Nevada Highway Patrol and Oregon Highway Patrol. The manual for using pop does not allow the LEO to use pop to obtain a final speed, only an initial speed estimation. Cheap RDs emit short bursts of radar, that RDs confuse for pop. Basically, it's not used very much, is difficult to detect, and causes lots of false alerts on our RDs, so most of us have this setting turned off.

If you turn pop off and you get a Ka alert, it's almost always real. Using a V1, the rest is memorization. You have to remember your false alerts and anything different than those is suspicious. We can start there. As far as what your specific local PD uses, you'll have to figure that out yourself, unless it's on this list.

That all depends on how close the door is to the road, it's angle with the road, etc, etc. That might be a reasonable generalization, but by no means is it a hard rule. For instance, there are lots of K band speed signs that will give you a full alert on your V1, but are not a LEO.

As others have noticed and suggested, perhaps it is best to turn POP off.

A V1, for a newbie, in LA, has got to be quite overwhelming.

But for LA it's safe to turn off?

Are there any tricks to identifying real laser over a fake?

example: I was driving back from Long beach, and had short blips of laser, I slowed after the first. (only 1 car around, and he was to the right of me) ~1:30 am


When I got to around Wilshire, I got 1 laser ~2:25 am
slowed, nothing happened, sped up got off at Sunset.

Again.. not really any cars around.

I have around 2-4 inches of that blue tint at the top of the front windshield, then the mirror, so I have my v1 kind of mounted like this (found this online, not my car)

car type is a G35 (I read elsewhere in the forum about different window types can effect it?)


Tint was done by factory, medium tint on rear / side windows

That's probably the smart thing to do, but to be honest, I've just left pop off and have had no trouble picking up NHP.

That's my opinion. I have never seen any pop-capable radar anywhere in LA. I have pop off on all my RDs.

Not really. False laser alerts in LA are usually from Infinitis with the LCC. Yours doesn't have that system, does it?

Those quick laser alerts are usually from an Infiniti going the other direction.

Again, probably an Infiniti going the other direction. The only proper defense for laser is a laser jammer. If the laser alert was from a real laser toting LEO, slowing down when you get a laser alert is probably too late.

Your windshield does not have the athermic windshield that causes these kinds of problems. I'm personally not a fan of those kinds of mounts. I prefer to mount my RDs up high, behind the tint, so that thieves have a tougher time seeing my RD if I leave it up.

Also, doesn't your car have a pretty large LCD screen in it? With this mount keeping your V1 pretty far back from the windshield, your laser false alerts might be caused by your V1 seeing the LCD screen.
