Re: Cell phones and driving
I will be so happy when they ban the use of cell phones while driving. I can't think of a single thing that is so important that it can't wait until you are off the road. If it is that important, you should not be driving so you can put your full attention to that situation.
We do it because it is expected of us, our clients, bosses, spouses, etc. expect instant communications, that 95% of the time is not that important. I can't wait until the time comes when I can just turn the darn thing off because everyone won't expect me to answer when I am on the road.
Re: Cell phones and driving
The problem is so it listening to the radio and talking to someone else in the car. Prior to cell phones becoming so popular while driving the insurance institute listed listening and messing with the radio and yelling at one's kids as the primary reason for people getting in an accident.
So why not outlaws those activities while you at it. Plan an simple most people lack the skills to multitask, than add on the fact you have all these people running around with ADD no surprise you have more accidents.
The car industry knew the only way to sell more cars it to make them easier to drive, thus the invention of the automatic transmission and power steering, when these two things become common place you had more people driving because it did not require them to be able to do more than one thing at once. Driving a stick requires you to know what gear you are in, how to press the right peddle at the right time and also steer the car and watch what was going one around you.

I agree with you about latter but disagree about the former. I have never had the radio... distract me. It is really just well orchestrated background noise. On the other hand, I have horrible conversations in the car, because I focus so much on driving. I can only manage a very basic conversation most of the time.

I agree let's outlaw talking while in the car too. That way my wife to be will have to be quiet while I am driving.:D
Re: Cell phones and driving
I'm all for "sterile cockpits" but its a hard sell with people that don't really want to be driving in the first place. The distractions help to pass the time, so frankly I don't care if they talk on the phone, watch TV or give each other head as long as they stay out of the passing lane.

A well timed application of the brake pedal may work too... just make sure they aren't holding a beverage.

Re: Cell phones and driving
I have had too many close calls by people not paying attention because of the phone. The problem is that even if they outlaw phone usage they will never enforce it.
