Leaving POP on increases the sensitivity to pick up tiny traces if radar emitting from guns set on POP mode. In reality, all it does is turn your radar detector into a Cobra detector. You can turn POP mode off and breath a little easier since you'll deal with fewer falses throughout the day.
POP mode is pretty much never used since it cannot be used as evidence, if I'm not mistaken.
Pop is a feature on some radar guns. Only one radar manufacturer offers this feature, MPH Industries. Pop is a short, timed(either 16ms in stationary mode or 67ms in moving mode), burst of radar that was designed to be difficult for RDs to detect. This feature is almost never used by LEOs, since it is not admissable in court. MPH Industries radar user's manuals say that this is to be used only for speed estimation and must be confirmed with normal radar.
Cheap, leaky RDs oftem mimic a shot of pop, thus making your RD falsely alert to pop radar. Where do you live and drive? It is probably safe to turn it off, depending on how prevelant MPH Industries' radar is around you.
