Longtime RD user & Euro car enthusiast...
Hey everybody! Just a short little intro thread for me - I'm a San Francisco area native who had relied heavily on RDs for CHP and local police detection. I'm also a bit of a euro car enthusiast, and a need for speed and enjoying these european cars as they are designed and engineered to perform is somewhat counterproductive if you want to hold onto a driver's license around here!
I recently upgraded an S7 based Escort 8500 X50 to an M4 Escort 9500i, and am debating upgrading to a 9500ix simply for the TSR software - as CHP seems to be on Ka 34.7 GHz, and also relying more and more heavily on laser guns. My DIY project this weekend included finally ditching the coiled cigarette lighter SmartCord and switching to the DirectWire SmartCord for my car's setup. Photos of the install are included at the end of the post...
Does anyone know of a comprehensive list, or has anyone attempted to compile information on what each municipality and enforcement agencies in the Bay Area uses in terms of radar guns, frequency, bands, etc?
At any rate, I'll wrap up now. Seems like a fun forum, and having been lurking for a while, I feel much more informed about RDs and countermeasures than I otherwise would have been!
Photos of my 9500i hard wire install below:
EDITED BECAUSE I CAN'T LINK TO IMAGES
For power, I tapped into the cigarette lighter since it's ignition switched and seemed to handle the load of both my phone charger and the RD without an issue...

Nope. But you can ATTACH them to your post.
There's a list in the Local and Regional Info section of known radar bands used across the country. Not sure how comprehensively it covers the Bay area, but it's a start!
Welcome!

Yea, id start out where Stealth Stalker suggested. Try this page actually (currently the last) http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...6-09-a-23.html
v1user has taken the (very kind) liberty of updating it for the first time in forever. Check his link out there. While you likely wont find anything as comprehensive as what i did for KY, you should be able to get good enough information on which bands and maybe a few frequencies for some counties.
Welcome, enjoy your stay (and your Euro cars, we know theyre the best ;))

Nice install. What's with the curly cord stretched across there?

That's actually my power connector for my phone - a Motorola Droid, which runs Trapster when I'm traveling. I am still trying to figure out how to get rid of that, as I still need a DC 12v to USB converter. I wasn't feeling all that adventurous. The cord is wrapped around the cruise control stalk to keep it in place and provide some slack on the other side...
The RD install is clean - I got it under all the panels and wired it up through the A pillar and under the headliner. Just haven't tackled my USB issue yet... which is my next DIY...
