New to LI (converting from Passport 9500ci donated to wife) - Questions?
I have looked through the posts so sorry if I repeat old questions..
How important is it that I get a cable to interface with the CPU on a computer? Meaning are the default settings pretty adequate for the everyday user? Volume etc?
Looking at the posts I see people referencing turning the LI off, or pausing it? I see one switch in the package. I assume this one switch is to alternate between Jam and "parking" settings, and that if you are on JAM, encounter a threat, you slow down to the safe speed and flip the rocker the other way, so that it does not jam? At this point if you are not jamming do the device still tell you if you get double and triple tapped by Lidar? When you pass the threat you flip the switch back? Do I have that correct?
Lastly, How many of you think adding the external speaker is necessary? Is this a specific speaker to buy? Yes usually have the stereo cranked but prefer to not have the LI interface with my stereo speakers.
thanks for the help, Tom
Re: New to LI (converting from Passport 9500ci donated to wife) - Questions?
Hi Tom,
All LI's are shipped, as part of QC (Quality Control), pre-configured so no need to connect it to a laptop. Just install/plug and play. When a new update becomes available, such as when a new LIDAR is to be added, you will then be able to do so. You may check for updates here: http://www.laser-interceptorusa.com/922.html
The power switch supplied with all LI's is used to both turn the LI on and off as well as to turn the LI off when you encounter a LIDAR trap and after you get you speed down to the PSL and allowing the LIDAR operator to acquire your speed thereby not arousing any suspicions that he was jammed, as you have noted in your post. This is what is know as "JTK" or Jam to Kill. There is also a second Optional PA/JAM Switch for areas where LCM are Illegal but for your use, the main power switch will be fine.
If you install the LI CPU, with it's built in speaker, near your seating location so it projects towards the driver, you should be able to hear the LI Voice Alerts well enough without the need for an external speaker. One can, of course, be added if you feel you need to. Escort has a wonderful 12V amplified speaker or any inexpensive non-amplified communication speaker such as those found in truck stops and used for CB radios will also suffice. DO NOT hook the LI up to your car stereo. This will damage the LI and is NOT covered by the Warranty. You must use a dedicated speaker reserved just for the LI.

Bump to Cliff. He configures everything so when it goes out to you, its just plug and play. Someone on here had the Blinders and they weren't preconfigured, just default from the factory to constant jam=OFF. So when I tested his setup, I was getting punch throughs.
Thumbs up for Cliff. :)

If you crank the tunes you will want an external speaker.
Escort used to have a power speaker that is great, check with RadarBusters to see if it's still available.

Congrats on your new toy! ;)
Like Cliff said, there is a PA/JAM switch that you can use in areas where jammers are illegal, but from what I read you can just use the main power switch to JTK after you get a LIDAR alert.
Regarding the external speaker...it depends on where you put the CPU. If you bury it behind the dashboard, and as cat4 said, if you like to crank up the tunes, then YES, an external speaker is a MUST!
ENJOY!!!:D:D:D

Wow, I actually planned on doing that when I order my LI. But not anymore, hah. Just out of curiosity, why is this bad?

Imagine introducing a 100 to 500 w signal into a 1 Watt speaker.

As others have said the "stock" settings are fine. I even have a cable for my HP Tuners that I could use and have never even hooked it up yet...
I think Cliff answered your switch question.
I have the Escort External speaker and wouldn't have it any other way. I will put it like this, without it you will hear "something" and get on the brakes within a few seconds of alert. WITH it you will be certain the LI is jamming as it will scare the crap out of you and jam the brakes instantly. Without it you might here what gun was used, WITH it you will be certain. For me the 30 bucks or whatever it was is a no brainer. When you hear the stock LI and the crackly muffled speaker you will want to upgrade IMHO.
If nothing else when you have a client/friend/family member get in your car and you are telling them about your expensive new toy then they hear the LI speaker say "Welcome".....Do you want them to hear it and think wow very nice or wow this thing must be a cheap gimmick! haha
BTW I am happy with my LI and if the only "pitfall" is a weak speaker that can be remedied for less than $30 I am cool with that.
