The closer I get to choosing between the V1/RL, the more confirmation I seem to need. Anywho, the DPS and CHP often sit in the center divide at 30/45 degrees in order to shoot both directions for minimum signature. Is there any significant advantage between the RL/V1 to worry about?
Also, does anyone know whether California is aggressively enforcing RD detection/citation of out of State drivers?
Any CHP I've ever encountered that runs C/O Ka band has always given plenty of warning time with my 9500ix, and I've seen them parked in the center divide at all angles. The V1 or RL, no matter which you choose, is only going to give even further range and off axis detection than that. So no, I wouldn't worry too much about either of them lacking in that regard. As long as you've got a few cars running out in front of you, you're almost guaranteed to catch a glimpse of his radar with a sensitive detector.
And seeing as how the possession of radar detectors are legal in all states except Virginia & D.C., I don't see how California could legally issue citations for radar detector possession, regardless of whether you're a CA resident or not.
Thank you, that's what I needed to know. I was misinformed as to the whole legal thing' in CA.
So are you developing a preference yet as to which one you're going to buy?

Actually, I'm glad you asked. I simply need some Kool-Aid talk or some other kind of nudging at this point. After vacillating for like’ ever, I’m leaning towards the V1. Just so I get the worst possible deal, I may order tonight or in the morning for overnight shipment. I have another 400-mile road trip planned for Saturday.
Many V1 users have both V1/RL and it seems like it is split right down the middle between the two. The little extra range reported of the Redline is a great advantage, then the arrows of the V1 are very much loved. The off axis issue is like this, you are not being clocked yet. But it scares the crap out of a RD user sometimes afraid of a solid hit with I/O or laser when one sees the Leo first but on alarm on the RD. On straight open desert roads, off axis is not a great issue, just on hilly moutain curves when the beam comes pointing your way real fast or an I/O hit, rare but happens. I threaded that the off axis of the V1 sucks, but guess what, it is a failure of all RDs on higher freqs. on glass mount units. The designers do this to limit side false alarms and to max out-front distance by the horn design. Using the V1 for 16 years, for my rual usage, I love the V1 but put me in a metro area, an Escort with GPS lock-out would be my choice. Good luck for it is a hard choice between the two great defenders.....
Yeah, it is a hard choice but whatever you get you can' go wrong or you can have the best of both world you can get the Sti-r plus if you can afford it. I have both and I use the Redline going from Seattle to Las Vegas and got awesome range but in the city the V1 is good for the arrow, good luck also the Redline is good picking up Ka 35.5.

Between my V1 and Redline the Redline do a better job on picking up off axis.
