Adding mute switch to Scion xa, as mode button on steering wheel for Valentine wiring
After doing some research I used the pinout guide for the mute button.
If you are doing this on a 2006 scion xa you may not have to do steps 1 and 2, just pop out the radio, either after market or stock. If you cannot get your radio out you should not be reading this anyway.
1.Then after unhooking the negitive battery terminal from the car, I took off the airbag, its just 2 torx screws under the wheel, you will see them. They do not come all the way out.
2.After you have removed the airbag, just take one more screw out of the control module , it will come off the wheel, once in hand remove the 3 tiny phillips head screws and it will pop a part with a little effort.
This is how you know what wires go into the back of the radio, colors so you can use it as a switch.
3. After you have removed the radio you will need to hook one wire to the mute lead off the V1 that will come out of your direct wire power adaptor to either the orange/gray wire or the light green/gray wire. Both wires noted go to the mode switch on your steering wheel.

The plug show will be in the back of your stock radio or if you have an aftermarket one they will not be plugged into anything.
Just make sure when you cut the wires off the back of your radio to cover/wire nut the ends.

This is the location of the connector in the dash.
Also the switch is located here on car.

So mute wire runs out of the v1 into the Direct-wire power adaptor, from their I used some cat 5 ethernet cable and put a Rj11 or phone end on with the wire placed in where the mute would go. Then this cat5 or wire runs to one of the wires cut off from the radio plug, the other wire goes to ground somewhere. Then when the mode is pressed it brings the mute wire to ground thus muting the V1. I did not use a resistor. You may use a 10k resistor if you like.
This took me about an hour because I had to figure out where the wires went and they do change colors.
If anyone has any question let me know.

Nice job, wish my car had a mute switch on the steering wheel !! I ended up fitting a flat aftermarket mute switch to the end of my wiper stalk, which I saw somewhere on this forum.

Well, its just mounted on the windshield for now all the way at top , just to the right of the rear veiw. Trust me I have been tring to figure out a way to attach it to my roof so its not visable from the outside of the car. For theft.
The Visor clip will not work and the visor on my car is really lame, meaning I would have to prop somthing under it to make the v1 be level.
Thanks guys.

V-1 install using visor mount - not visor
Why I avoid mounting to a visor

For now I used the clip mount and on the inside of the headliner, I put some foam to make the v1 level.. works good, unit is off the window, so less visable. I do wish the mount was more sturdy for pulling in and out of car.
It is visable just under the windshield dots and above the rear view to see the road for laser. I just did not want to mount to the windshield so no one wants it more them me.
