Trying to understand something in relation to my XTR695
This morning I drove by a group of bike officers camped in the median gunning people. I was traveling at correct speeds so no issues, however I was concerned as my 695 didnt sound at all. I recently mounted it higher on my windshield ( just left of my mirror in fact) which is supposed to have better accuracy.
I guess what Im wondering if its its likely that they were using laser and during my time near them they never gunned in my direction, or that there is something up with my RD? Or possibly something else?
Being 10ft from the guys and seeing them with gun in hand but no alerts was definitely concerning.
Thanks for helping a newb

sounds like laser to me...

X2 on laser. Don't worry there are ways to defend against laser and a radar detector isn't enough.
Re: Trying to understand something in relation to my XTR695
Were they holding the gun up to their face, as if to look through a HUD/scope/viewfinder piece on the top to aim it? If so, it was laser. Also, laser guns have lenses (most guns have 2, either side by side or one above the other) on the business end.
There's pics of the most commonly seen lidar (laser) guns here: Laser Guns - Guys of LIDAR See if any of them look familiar.

From the brief look I got I would say it resembled the ProLaser III from the site. So if it was the laser gun, then the beam for laser is much narrower and he likely didnt point it at me? Or could it be that my RD doesnt pick up certain types of Laser? Thanks!

Your radar detector can detect laser if the laser gun is pointed at it. The problem is that a laser beam is just what it sounds like, a beam, which emits a very narrow cone of infrared light. On the average, the beam is about 3ft in diameter at 1000ft distance from the laser gun. So, say the LEO shoots your car when it's 500ft from him. The beam diameter would be about 18 inches or so. If he's aiming at your grille(which most do), your windshield mounted radar detector is very unlikely to detect it. On the other hand, if the LEO targets your car at about 2000ft, the beam diameter will be about 6ft. In that case, your radar detector would have an excellent chance to detect that shot.
