You know, I'm sorry the kids lost their kitty, but I have a general rule: for anything that doesn't threaten my car, life or freedom, I'm not going to take extreme measures to avoid it. I'll gladly get rear ended to avoid taking deer antlers to the face or to save a dumb pedestrian who would sue me for all I'm worth, but I'm not going to take that risk to save Mr. Whiskers. With the way animals run out in front of you sometimes, speed has very little to do with it.
