Question about Escort Passport performance
Ok, I've had my Escort Passport for about a month now and am generally happy. However I am curious about the performance sometimes.
Sometimes, when driving in city traffic, I can see a police car coming down the opposite way towards me. I anticipate my detector would have detected something a while ago, but it sits silent. Until the officer passes me. Literallly as the officer is at my side and just past my vehicle, the radar detector will blast a full level alert of K or Ka band detection. I could chalk that up to the officer switching on his radar about that time. However, this has happened at least a dozen times.
Normally I keep my detector in highway mode. False alerts dont bother me so much, and as I mentioned in my introduction, police in my area use all types of radar, including X-band, so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Plus being a detector enthusiast from way back, before some of this filtering stuff was in place, I got used to tuning out the false alarms.
Anyway, I've switched to auto and have had the same type of detection...cop car passes and as soon as it's behind me the detector goes off full blast.
It's positioned directly in the middle of my windshield, well above the dash. Also, there have been plenty of times when the detector goes off about half a mile or more before the threat, so I know that it's capable of functioning right.
Is there something wrong with the unit? Is this just coincidence 12 or 15 times? Could I be doing something wrong? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Re: Question about Escort Passport performance
Hey Hoss...Marty here...New Passport in January/with live too. As a former commissioner..Some of my guys and gals...well, they would run only the rear speed gatherer..then when they moved from running the rear..forgot to turn it off....But like 15 times...JUST WOW! I had this happen last week--I quickly put my hand over the rear antenna and it SLOWED it at lot so, I knew the cop had his READ unit on, not a front unit...
Maybe shoot Roy a note...He has ALL the folks in ARIZ this weekend and he can share your concern..which is not mine too...
Be well Hoss...M

1- Turn off Auto and put it in Highway
2- it could be the LEO using I/O, leaving his radar unit off till he sees a target he want to shoot.
2b- It could be the LEO has his rear radar unit on and you only get the signal once he passes.

Re: Question about Escort Passport performance
I didn't know there was an option for a radar operator to only operate the rear facing radar. I can totally live with that answer.
It's small town-ish up here, it's not unfeasible to be passing the same 2 or 3 officers when my detector does this lol.
Thanks a ton!
Re: Question about Escort Passport performance
Thank you CRJ - I'm now generally keeping it on highway no matter what now. I think the rear radar unit being on is the culprit. I didn't know this was a possibility until reading Marty's reply.

Yes, the Stalker Duel DSR X2 has 2 antennas, one front one rear. They can be used simultaneously or independently. Stalker runs ~34.7.
