The tables are turned on K-Band V1 vs RX65
A short while ago I posted a test on Ka-Band @35.5GHz against a parked patrol unit. The RX65 bested the V1 by 20% to 25% in that review.
Tonite along a different portion of my route, I came upon the home of an LEO who had parked his patrol car in his driveway, about 100ft from the roadbed and firing straight across it. This town uses Kustom K-Band dash mounted units, but I know they budgeted in a recent town meeting for a new cruiser, so Ka may be coming as a new toy for them.
As before, the V1 and RX65 are mounted high on either side of my rear view mirror. The V1 is in "A"ll bogey mode and factory default, while the RX65 is set to HWY, Ka=USA, POP=on. This is also in a rural area with lots of trees and widely spaced houses, so scatter gets absorbed quickly.
I made a couple of runs each direction ,and the results were pretty consistent. Coming from the north one rises up a hill from a flat portion of the road to the detecton area, which is flat and straight. The rise is steep and about a 45ft change in altitude. The V1 alerted right at the top of the hill as the car came level.
Overall range is about 900ft from the north and 1100ft from the south. The V1 alerted about 200ft sooner from the north, which may have been longer if the hill was not there, and 250ft sooner from the south.
This figures to a 20% to 25% range advantage on K-Band for the V1 over the RX65, just the opposite of the Ka-Band 35.5GHz results. Talk about frustrating! Which unit to keep?
