Nine sites chosen for traffic cameras

Some red light cameras will soon be watching how you drive and Wednesday morning a few of the pieces of technology were put into place.

The intersection of Alcoa Highway and Kingston Pike was the first spot to receive the cameras along with North Peters Road and Cedar Bluff. Henley Street has two intersections with cameras including the light at Summit Hill and Cumberland Avenue.

Once a picture is taken, the information will be sent to Knoxville Police Department for specific officers to review before issuing a ticket to each driver.

The other intersections:
-Northbound and Southbound Lovell Road at Westbound I-40/75 exit.
-Northbound and Southbound Cedar Bluff Road at Westbound I-40/75 exit
-Eastbound Kingston Pike at Papermill Drive
-Northbound and Southbound Clinton Highway at Tillery Drive

First red light camera goes up in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- If you run a red light in Knoxville, you may be caught on camera. Wednesday, the first set of red light cameras was set up, just off of the UT campus.

The camera is at the busy intersection of Kingston Pike and Alcoa Highway. The large, white unit is on a silver pole.

6 News was told signs will soon be put up to tell people they're about to enter an intersection where that's monitored and they could be fined for running a red light.

The key to the cameras is a white line on the road as you approach the intersection. If your car's front tires go over the white line after the light turns red, you will get a $50 fine.

As long as you're in the intersection before the light changes, you won't be fined. But police want to cut down on accidents.

For the first 30 days, the city will give drivers a break. Even drivers who go through the red lights will only get warnings in the mail.

However, after the 30 day period is over, you will get fined $50.

The camera at Kingston Pike and Alcoa is not operational yet but 6 News was told it could be running within a week or so. More intersections will follow.
