Anyone take the direct wired adapter apart

I'll be hardwiring a remote mute switch (thanks Jim!)and was planning tapping into the wires inside the VR direct wire adapter. I was wondering if anyone has taken one apart and knows how hard it is to solder a couple wires in parallel. If its not possible (or easy), I can fabricate an RJ11 splitter, but I'd need to get supplies.

Mine in is currently in the car and I will have to take the lower part of the dash off to get to it. I just want to know if I need to go shopping for the RJ11 splitter before I take my dash apart

I've taken it apart to see what kind of noise filtering it has and it only uses a cheap $0.001 dollar ceramic cap to filter the 12v power :( ....

BUT back to the subject, it is a pain in the butt to get the hardwire adaptor apart. it uses plastic clips to keep it togethor.

inside is a small PCB that you can easily solder to, the hardest part of the job would be gettin the stupid thing apart.

I can't really describe how to do it, but you will ruin the finish of the adaptor trying to pry it apart. Stick a knife or something into the side and pry is basicly how I did it.

someone with a porsche put the remote v1 display inside the dash clock.

and they also wired up a mute switch to the v1 remote display....

I think he was wanting to know about inside the direct wire adapter, not the remote display...

Thats correct. I was originally planning on wiring directly into the remote display. But since then I found Jim's excellent instructions on wiring the mute button directly to on the v1's bus, see link in my first post. From SPL15's description, it looks like it will be tricky but possible. I much prefer a soldered connection a string of rj11 connectors.

BTW, Jim thanks again for the drawing, very helpful. Seems like we need a "Book of Jim" to house your vast techncial contributions. I had a hard time finding this one and just got lucky after lots of searching.

OK, well never mind about the details of the direct wire adapter. I ended up going with an RJ11 splitter. I needed to provide a connector for the wire that goes to the remote button, so if needed at some later date, dissassembly of the dash piece would not require wire cutting and resoldering of the switch.

Since the RJ11 is already the VR standard it ended up being easier to solder the the switch to some old phone cord I had in stock, and attach the other end to the splitter. I soldered the resistor inline with the switch. I tested it out tonight and its working fine. I ran out of time to complete the install of the switch into the dash and will post some pics once its done.

No problem :D I had actually forgotten that I posted that, maybe I'll work on a "book of jim" :lol:

I was working on the same project last weekend. I just sliced onto the cord and added a couple spade connectors in case I need to take it apart.

Now I have the remote display up at the base of the windshield right in my line of sight. It is so nice to notice the alerts right away! It is also nice to just reach forward and hit the remote mute switch. I should have done this earlier!!!

Ya now that I have a simple RJ11 attached mute switch, it makes me wonder why VR doesn't sell these kits. I had a really hard time finding a decent push button switch I was *willing* to install in my car. I didn't care for the nasty big red buttons that seemed so common.
