Overpass testing

Well i finally found a decent location for the overpass testing i've wanted to do.
it's about 15' up, plus another 5' or so for gun height.

i shot from 1 lane over and about 3-4 lanes over for front shots, and about 1 lane over for rear shots.

This was mainly a Blinder test with some ZR3's added to the mix.

i had several questions i've been wanting answers to.

1. How does performance compare to side and straight shots?

2. Does height affect jammer performance to any big degree?

3. Does my setup work to protect me from overpass shots, front and rear?

4. How well do jammers do through glass, and can glass/tint affect performance?

5. How about roof shots?


well i've been able to come up with the answers now.


First, as i suspected, my jammers had a bit more of a struggle with overhead shots. my reason for this suspicion is because i noticed that when i look at the jammer heads firing with a camera, as i move the camera up or down, this affects the intensity of the beam. level with the camera gives the brightest intensity.

For those that have seen my videos, i can obtain JTG and JFG results, consistently from straight and side shots.

so how did i do with overpass shots?

from the front, i was able to get PT's from about 77' up to one with about 220'.
i had a JTG, but the gun shifted at the last minute.
in the real world fortunately this won't be an issue in my case, as i had no problem jamming from beyond that, and at that range you would see them, but nonetheless, PT is PT.

the rear was a different story. Due to my low mount, the Blinders really struggled. i was able to get several PT's at different distances.

The ZR3's in my rear window had trouble and did not help much with the window up. however when i rolled the rear window down, i got a JFG!

So the shifters helped on a high shot, but not as well if they are obstructed by glass and tint.

the overpass shots definately take advantage of weak spots in a setup.

i was able to pull some roof shots on cars, including mine without jammer, but not with, since i have a shifter sitting top and bottom of my windshield, facing up at an angle.

from ground shots i can't get a roof shot reading either, not even with jammers off.

with the ease of frontal shots, roof shots are much harder and would be a "last resort" i believe.

The first punch through in the video is a sweep up the hood. IMHO no front mounted jammer placement inside of ~200 feet is going to provide enough coverage to cover the hood, several inches to feet behind the TX heads.........

Would an additional jammer head along the wiper blades / hood edge provide the overpass punch through assistance you need?

didn't seem like it, since i have a shifter sitting at the bottom front of the dash, pointed up slightly.

if i shoot up higher to the top front and windshield area, i get no readings.

in other video footage i have, i got readings shooting down lower on the front also.

i agree, at that angle and distance, the beam is so tight.

given the ease of shots, i don't see them waiting until the car is right under them to shoot, so i suspect that i would have time to slow even if i don't adjust anything.

that teaser was about 2 minutes of video. i have about 30 good minutes of video, not only my truck front and rear, but other vehicles, front and rear as well.

it was nice being able to pick off cars at 1200' away or so, yet without a jammer on, i was unable to get a reading until about 800 something feet. :)

Now that was cool. I think it's the only video that has not been done on here if I can remember. I gotta say that is one stealth truck. When it is coming towards the camera it almost looks like you have a solid black cover on it.

wow!!! man RacerX that is awesome! So what's the deal I'm guessing your back window just slides down like in a limo or something?

Although it was not odvious on video but did that overpass have a chain fence you had to work around?

I dont know if it would be relevant however I would be interested to see what would happen if someone where to mount a diode based jammer AL / Lidatek somewhere in the middle of there windshield wipers. Just angled up slightly, I wonder if this would help at all with overpass shots?

Wow that looks like some really awesome testing. I have a strong feeling that this will end up being VERY difficult to top, by GOL or anyone else!

The results coming towards the laser gun were better then I expected. Shooting the rear of a car were no suprise.

yeah i've tried to stealth it out as much as possible. those clear headlight covers with a coat of Veil helps a lot. plus i have aftermarket headlights that are painted flat black inside, except for a small portion around the center reflector.
when i get the rest of the vids together you'll be able to see that even without jammers, it took a while for a lock, while other vehicles were locking almost instantly.

i'm also looking forward to your upcoming testing. i want to see if it will confirm what i've done, in that straight/side shots perform better than overpass shots with the same vehicle and jammer.

yeah, the back window slides all the way down. very cool feature. :D

on the one one run with several Pt's the camera was rolling and i wasn't happy. i called up to confirm the jammers were on and they were. :(

i know the upper tailgate area is a weak spot when targeted up close from the ground up to around 200' or so, but from above the Blinders really struggled. i suspect other jammers will too. if Lidatek hadn't done so poorly in the GOL test ( in my opinion for what i need) then i think i would have had different results, since i was going to put one in my tailgate handle. whatever i put in there will be angled up some though now.
i was surprised at the difference between having the shifters "outside" as opposed to behind the tint. it was like a night and day run.

No chain link. it was actually a walkway, so i used my latest toy, a portable battery pack. i had to find a spot with no chain link so it wouldn't interfere in any way.

i don't think a diode jammer around the middle of the windshield would help much, especially since the beam is getting smaller, and i was also getting PT's on the lower part of my front end as well.

one possiblity is that my two top Blinders are down a little (location, not angle) and moved in. along with the rear Lidatek i was going to put 2 up front near the top. i think two up there and angled would protect the rest of the front end below them though.

i actually have a shifter at the lower part of the windshield, angled up, and on up at the top, angled up.

right now, my two bottom Blinders are actually behind the mesh screen, since i haven't cut that out yet. i know it makes them a little weaker, but i can still get JTG on the ground. for more of a "stealthy look", i'm going to leave them like that for now.

yeah the jammers did pretty good for the front, but the back surprised me a bit. i expected to be able to pull of some readings up close, but i didn't expect to get the readings i got, especially that one run.
fortunately, overpass shots aren't really an issue here, since there aren't that many except on the freeway, and they have yet to do laser on the freeway. if it was ,i'd be outside right now, mounting those shifters externally. :)

to recap, i picked off other cars no problem and even my truck at close range with no jammer on. i got many PT's around 77-95' with jammers on, but still plenty of time to slow as you'll see.

one of the most interesting parts are the extreme anlge shots i did. 2 base runs showed me picking off other vehicles at around 1100-1200' no problem, but when i tried to get a reading from mine, it took about 10 seconds each time before it got a reading, with NO jammers on.

i just saw the front vid also, very very nice. that whole roof shot theory seemed like a bunch of b.s. to me because they can only do that at very close range, giving you enough time to slow down. i liked the music better in the front vid :D thanks for the vid racerx :!:

Outstanding! Did the jammer heads behind glass actually help? Did you do any panning up to the glass, side mirrors, and roof line for any of the tests? I have been wondering for a while if mounting heads behind the glass might help with head placement for the panning LEO. Thanks for posting the vids!

from what i see, a roof shot is a last resort shot, if they just can't get a reading anywhere else and really want a reading. from ground level or up high, frontal shots center mass are too easy.
plus, here we don't have front plates and i still had no problems picking off cars left and right.
glad you liked the music on this one. the next one is a little more rock and roll, but i'm open to requests for future vids. :)

mounting behind clear glass may be okay, but tinted won't do as much.
my upper front shifter is actually behind the tint strip, and it's enough to jam a roof shot, but from the ground i can get a JTG without jammers on aiming at my roof. as you'll see on the rear video, jammer performance was reduced being behind tint.
they are located about 6' from the tailgate, but having the window down and then angling them up did help out.


Here's the rear video. i decided to include my Pt's with my reaction. i wasn't too happy, but it's good to see what high shots do to jammer performance. i triedto pan to a few different locations to see how it would cover.

compared to ground level shooting, my jammers had much more trouble protecting the rear with overhead shots. up close i figured it would be similar to the last minute PT like the front, but i didn't quite expect it to have as much trouble further out.

He also has 2 blinder heads right above rear plate

yeah, i do much better from the ground.

Basically, i have two Blinder heads above the rear plate, below the tailgate.
since the shifters came with my SR7plus, i decided to use them.
i put one behind each headrest, at the rear window. until this latest test, i wasn't sure what or how much they would jam.

i don't really have anywhere inconspicuous to put additional heads on the rear. at this point i want to put either an AL head, or Lidatek ( since both are compact) into the handle area of my tailgate. one of those would fit under the handle and give me the upper center protection i need. a Blinder head is too big to fit inside there.

Yeah i have Veil and a bra on my truck, plus i covered the chrome strips behind the bra that were still visible.

No front plate so no lasershield.

here's a vid i did of a base run with my truck.
i shot another similar size vehicle with no bra, or Veil and then my truck.
you can see the huge difference cutting down on reflective surfaces does.

at some point i think i'll do some AL tests in the same spot, to see how they compare on the same overhead shots.

when u drive now, do u have all like 6 or 7 of ur jammers on at the same time
