Suction cups not sticking on cold window

Well, I tried to put my window mount up last night but the suction cups wouldn't adhere to the window. :x I cleaned up an older pair of cups for my V1, put them in boiling water but for a bit too long. Maybe I will try to use a newer pair. I even had a problem getting my BelEscort window mount to stick. Cold weather and suction cups do not go well together!!!

Dont feel bad, same thing with my x50. It was 6 degrees here last night and it came off. I had to put it on dashboard while i drove home from work and it didnt even pick up false alerts where i usually get them when i mount it high.

Yeah I just purchased a different car, so I have to get the velcro mounted on the dash as a backup.

u can wait till its warmed up and even put a dabble of saliva on the cups, once they stick and u get them set when it gets cold again they wont fall off. make sure there arent any air bubbles when u set them either.

I've never had trouble with mine in either cold or hot weather - but instead, I get some instances of, when there's large temperature fluctuations, coming back to my vehicle to find that the detector & suction-mount dangling on the hardwire. :lol:

I've now taken to re-moistening and re-mounting four times a year - one per quarter - and I've yet to have a failure over the last 9 months....

Whats the coldest it gets where you live? Like 60f?

I was having that problem a little bit ago, all it took was a little warm breath and a quick wipe down of the windshield and it is still up there.

yeah the other night i borrow my friends rx65...i could not, no matter how hard i tried or where i put them, get them to stick

as for the v1 people, just heat up ur winshield for a bit then it should work
or
dont have those problems, and get a RVM mount, like me :D

If you want them to stick more securely, but rather permanent, try this… once your car window heats up, apply a little silicone to the cups. Let dry before attaching RD. Preferably on a warmer sunny day. You can get the suction cups and silicone off with a razor blade if you need to at a later date.

Like I said, it's more of a permanent mount. But it works quite well. If you do need to take the suctions off and want to clean the silicone off, just use a razor blade and or a little paint thinner will break down the silicone.

if u have tint on ur window, will it just take that right off?

You mean aftermarket "film" tint?

In that case, yes, it will.

But to the best of my understanding, I thought that such tints were a big no-no when it comes to the front windshield?

By law, you are allowed to tint every window of your vehicle except for the windshield.

I feel your pain.. :x My V1 and RX65 have the same problem in cold weather. It gets about -10f here quite a few times a winter. With the very occasional -70f with wind chill.

^ See, that's the problem - I know that any tinting (aside from the factory top-edge "transparent" tint-band and OEM-thermal) of the windshield is most definitely not legal in Ohio.

What I'm wondering about is whether if any of the sunnier states, such as FL, TX, etc., or any of the desert plains states have different codes for this - certainly, they allow tinting to a higher percentage opacity for all other windows (Ohio is rather strict on this, too, and I've had countless friends "busted" for tint violations).

illinois doesn't allow tinting of driver windows, countless people got robbed for $75 which is the same as a speeding ticket :o

I was pulled over for that alone before :x

As for the windshield I bleive you can have the first 6" tinted. They have a little mark (small hash mark with an arrow) on them and you can tint that far down.

Get rid of the suction cups all together

I know winter is over and we're in spring now, but I finally found the perfect cold weather mounting technique that lets you easily take your rd off. All I did was use my windshield mount, take of the suction cups, and super glue 3m dual lock in its place. This is the stuff they use for I-PASS (Illinois) and EZ Pass (NorthEast). Works great, is extremely strong and 10x better than velco. Tucks up nicely behind my mirror, don't see the rd at all and barely see the I-PASS.

v1 in cold weather

I was having the same problem with the V1 in 15 deg F weather. The suction cups won't fasten in cold weather but if you fasten them when it's warm they will stay on when it gets cold.

I did what richardboy316 said: after I drove home (45 mins with heat on) I fastened my V1 just fine, then it stayed on since then (2 weeks now).

For radar, yes. For laser no, because of the tint band possibly reducing range.

I ordered some suction cups from VR. I got two sets, a big set and a smaller set? Why do they do this? I used the bigger ones and they are working just fine. Is there any advantage to using the smaller ones?
