My Thoughts On V1 vs STI NO FLAMING PLEASE

As all of you may know I have used the "top dogs" extensively and the two that I use now are the V1 and STI. I try to do my best to keep my opinions to myself since I am part of GOL and I do not want to come across as biassed but I am only human so I will give you my honest 100% HONEST opinion. Between the two our very own forum member Horn13 said it best and I agree with him 100% because this has been my experience as well. One's choice should be a no brainer if one lives in an area where Spectre III's are present. The STI is your only and EXCELLENT choice. Below is what Horn13 said in another forum when someone asked about people's thoughts on CP's recent test.

I'm hardly an expert but from my "Real World" experiences I also cannot see how the STI beat the V1 by such a HUGE margin........

I admit that my STI has excellent detection range on Ka band, but so does my V1.

The differences from my experiences are Negligible but I would say that the V1 is better in detecting all bands over my STI.

Of course in Laser detection there is no comparison. V1 is in a class by itself."

I agree, the only reason I have bought escort was based on price. I will return to a v1 eventually.

Especially since Long Island, NY is using more and more lidar as their weapon of choice

LIDAR is used on he Ohio highways 99% of he time.

I dont own both but if I lived where stealth was a necessity then the STi would be the only way to go.

If I lived in a place where radar detectors were illegal or Spectre III's were in use, I would definitely give the STi a try. As soon as Valentine Research makes their newest V1 Spectre immune, I would dump the STi and go back to a V1.

If spectre is used in your area the STI is the only way to go. I would love to try Bel products, but I cant seem to find anyone that has one or any place that sells them around here. When I try a Bel it will be RX-65 or the STI but since Mn is a RD legal state I find it hard to believe that anyone will have it here.

I guess he's so frickin in luv with his arrows he cant create a stealth v1 so close but yet so far. :lol:

Got to hand it to Bel they created an RD that can compete with the V1 and given the variable performance across units I'll bet there are Sti's out there surpass the v1s

For sure... STI and V1 performance are very close, and the STI is doing that with a much smaller horn(13?)... It's not the size, it's how you use it :wink: (Funny, that's an expression I've never actually used before :wink: :wink: )

Plus the STI seems to do very well on 34,3 Multanova cameras... AFAIK significantly better on them than anything else including V1 when they run superwide Ka. Maybe the Ka sensitivity of the STI is really that great, but Bel has swung it in favour of 34,3 and against the typical 34,7/33,8/35,5 USA bands we all know and love (or fear, if you run Cobra :twisted: ).

I'd side with Spanky on the likelyhood of a stealth V1. Mike doesn't do the whole "foreign" thing so he has little to gain, he did do the "euro mode" but didn't do much (any?) homework before releasing it initially. Current V1's actually have the Euro Mode with a bit wider guardbands...

V1 still owns everything on laser. I wonder if it is because Belscort doesn't really want to get to such a level, since they also manufacture jammers. But with the discontinuing of the old 905...

Since Bel/scort is all the same ownership I am guessing that the new Escort will be mirroring the STI in many ways.
Actually I see the STI mirroring the V1 in many ways with the magnesium casing, front controls so that it can be visor mounted (rear laser sensor still buried) several front laser sensors with two of them at a 45 degree angle for off-axis detection like the V1.7 always had.
V1 had a major change in 96-97 with a complete gut swap, then another major change in 01 going to 1.8
Every five years or so puts VR at 06-07 could we be seeing a V1.9 in a year or so?

I only use the best so I would have no problem using a V1 or STI depending on my situation. I live in an area where RD's are legal so the V1 fits me great. If I lived in another area where RD's were illegal then STI would be the EASY choice

Not the ones I drive. K, X, and Ka. 8 encounters on I-71 1/1/07 Cinci-Cleveland. 1 LIDAR. That is very similar to all other trips on this route and LIDAR is very rare on all the others I travel.

Yet I still look forward to my trips to the USA, where I can use my V1, with it's excellent detection range and arrows. Along with Lifespeed's remote.

Well since I'm a member of GOL, I too will just give you my 100% honest opinion base on what I have seen and having used both detectors.

I honestly think the STi has a slight edge on real world driving scenarios over the V1. I think the V1 is a great detector and does better that all others in Lab test, but not in real world test.

I also like the fact that the STi provides the about the same warning time as the V1 in the real world but it is a lot quieter when it comes non-police radar sources which I like a lot.

Providing the most warning on police radar with the least about of alerts to non police radar is what I like. I like my detector to shut the F up unless it is real police radar, that is why I choose the STi over the V1.

With that being said, you can't go wrong with either detector because essentially they are "neck in neck" in police radar detection.

STi's weaknesses =
No bogey counter (real important feature to me). Bogey counter rules when it works properly giving you a beep alert to another police radar source. STi is seriuosly lacking in that.

Alert tones are horrible, would be better if they ramped up like the X50 or V1.

V1's weaknesses =
It doesn't shut the F up around non-police radar sources. I know you can change this and that and screw around with the L or l mode, but I personally have never seen it used where that also didn't F with real police radar range. I rather use the STi in Highway all the time and have less falses while maintaing maximum police radar range.

And of course the V1 is not invisable to Spectre, not an issue for everyone.

With that being said this is only my opinion being the only member of The Guys of Lidar that does not use a V1. :lol:

These are just minor differences, you can't go wrong with either detector it just depends on what your prefernces are. When someone PM's me saying they want the best detector with cost not being an issue, I tell them to buy both the V1 and STi and then keep the one they prefer. That's the best way to do it if you want the best.

Of course there is always manufactuerr variance between detectors that makes a big difference, but that is a whole other issue.

Good points

IMO, all radar detectors are going to act the very same way to what you call "non" police radar sources because those sources are operating on police radar bands.
