For Anyone That Thinks The V1 Has Bad Off Axis Detection!

Today while getting to stop at the intersection I started to pick up a weak Ka 34.7 alert. While stopped the signal continued and the arrows pointed to the side. I make my left hand turn and the signal is getting stronger. About a half mile later I make a visual with the cop as he is coming in the opposite direction. I must say I was impressed as hell especially since we all know how easy it is for the cops to get reading off to the side perpendicular and .69 miles down the road :lol: :lol: :lol: :wink: :lol: IMO people that say the V1 lacks off axis detection are full of BS. On X and K the V1 owns off axis for me and I own two of them. This was my first AWESOME off axis detection on Ka 34.7. For all of you haters take note. All in all I got about .69 miles of perpendicular detection (used google earth). Not bad for Ka 34.7gh

I take it 34.7 is most common as you can't tell the frequency with the V1 alone.

I've had a v1 since 1993 and never thought off axis detection was a problem.

V1 off axis detection ability seems not as good as Rx65 ??

Which one of the three V1's were you using Happy? :lol:

A 1.7 could turn out to have better off-axis radar detection since a 1.8 shrunk the front radar antenna design in able to fit that big prism laser sensor into a smaller case taking up room where part of the 1.7 horn used to be.

If off-axis is done at GOL then 1.7 should be there, should be there anyway,
when is the next GOL test?

I have never had an off-axis problem as it seems that if a side street has a radar trap or sign on, my 1.7 never fails to chirp as passing.

Also was this in the city Happy? If so that makes 'off axis' detection much easier since there is SOOOO much for the radar signals to bounce off of around you. I always get better off-axis detection in the city with any of my detectors. In anycase, its a darn good alert, no doubt about that. I dont even get the .25miles you are talking about when the 5-0 is head-on with me.


Also 34.7, must be the only thing they use there then? Or did you see the antenna/gun configuration?

My V1 does work right sometimes? I have said many times just after I recieve it back from VR it works fantastic.

Yes the city is Brookpark, Ohio and it is heavily conjested in the morning so there was a lot of stuff for the signal to bounce. I will post pick of google earth later so you all get an idea the terrain.

I'd say the V1 has very mediocre off axis detection. I've come to this conclusion after multiple examples just like you describe with maybe 30 or 40 yard range.

The only way I can imagine this happening is in concrete canyonland with the signal ringing for miles and then the chances of the arrows actually pointing in the right direction or the bogey counter being right are remote.

So yeah this is the internet and there's an endless supply of BS around. You just have to use a little discrimination and look at the source.

So are you saying I am BSing? I am confused. From what I can see you refuse to accept facts like 33.8gh bug on the STI (video proof), V1's DOCUMENTED superior sensitivity numbers (professional engineer with over 25 years of experience performing lab sensitivity tests),etc. You need to step back and look at the FACTS.

I think the supposed off axis problem of the V1 has slowly put it on the same level of detection abilities as a Cobra.. (lol) Seriously, if there is a problem with the V1 and off axis detection I sure haven't seen it.

Maybe some people have faulty V1's that are making this claim, I don't know, but we need to have GOL test this and put this baby to bed once and for all. Because at the rate of negative posts I am seeing about the off axis issue, the V1 will soon be about as good as RMR or a brick. :lol:

I own V1 3.858 and V1 3.813 and have never seen off axis problems. In fact a lot of the "falsing" occurs because of V1's superior sensitivity which in turn gives it superior off axis detection. For crying out loud VR has to put a chip on it to control its off axis detection :lol:

I will take video of V1's off axis detection ability then post it and you will still refuse to accept facts. Wake up buddy and smell the coffee. Look at the lab sensitivity numbers. Look at our tests. IMO the V1 can be too sensitive at times especially around the city.

Two antennas should defiantly pick up a side street better, however I believe rumors started about this were referring to V1 picking up radar late on hills and corners.
These areas are hard to pick up especially with Ka.

V1 doesn't have an off axis issue if your wanting a deep detecting radar.

Look,,, each detector has its own flavor of detection. If you travel on mostly curvy roads you may want a detector that has shallow depth, but the antenna lobe has a very wide off axis coverage.

If you travel straight long highways the V1 would be ideal at detecting the deepest possible signal much like RD #3!!

These_are_not_issues_with the V1 but antenna design and one must pick out which radar works best for them.

I like a detector that has above average depth detection but a very wide off axis converge pattern like RD #1

But yes... Its time for GOL to perform off-axis test at EACH BAND frequency.

RD staying PUT while pointing North. The radar gun takes measurements at FIRST alert positions East then South then West.

7 streets to the side of you but 1/2 mile straight ahead around a bend in the highway is what we are talking about.

well it does the best with X,K, and most of Ka in terms of sensitivity. Oh laser too. The STI is a close second and tied with the X50 as my 2nd favorite detector. X50 has a special place in my heart because of ramp up and features while the STI has raw detection power

WTF does Mike V care about off axis detection? He's got two horns to provide the coverage. Everybody else has to make do with one and to get the 360 degrees it's going to be lower gain and wider angle of view. He can run a much higher gain horn with a narrower field of view so he gets stellar sensitivity figures... if you shoot down the barrel of the horn... but this won't transfer into the field directly because the real worlds off axis almost all the time.

The kicker is, the worse the off axis detection is for the V1, the better the arrows will work. The narrower the field of view of the two horns, the greater will be the differential in received signal strength between the two horns, giving you more reliable direction location. IMHO.

Someone who finally understands horn design!!

This debate is pointless w/o some solid testing. So mine V1 does great with off axis detection and for others it doesn't. Factory variance? Horn design? Area 51 radar interfering? Who knows... Let's test some in either the lab or real world and see what the results are. And let's test all bands, not just Ka.

Look at all of the things the V1 does right. Why do you only concentrate on the negatives? This is typical fan boy behavior. The funniest is when I see people take V1's positives and try to turn them into a negative. For example

1) Because the V1 has two antennas (front and back) it falses too much
2) V1 has arrows so it can tell you where the ticket is coming from
3) V1 is toooooooo sensitive so it falses too much
4) VR does not come out with new models so it uses old technology
5) Who cares about K band POP I only care about Ka POP
6) I do not care about laser detection and the V1 falses on laser too much
7) V1 keeps on updating software because they can not get it right
8 ) The V1's bogey counter doesn't work right

The list goes on and on. While my other team members choose to stay out of things while some people spew BS I am not this way. All I know is that test after test the V1 CONSISTENTLY ends up at the top of the list. There is a reason why VR has been in business as long as they have and have never gone in the hole. Personally I now use a Pro 78. I switch detectors every month just so I can give honest opinions/experiences. If people do not like a detector do not use the thing. No need to keep on bashing it. Sell the V1 and get your money back. No detector is perfect. The people that take this stuff personally makes me wonder who they work for. As far as GOL goes we do these tests for ourselves so we can cut through the BS. We CHOOSE to share the results with the world because unlike you a lot of people appreciate them.

Let's look at those bad off axis V1 numbers again. :lol:
