Why is it best to have POP set to off?
I read a post earlier about how it was better to keep the RD in threat mode versus ramp up. What is a notification that I should be concerned about (vs. one for a door at a 7-11)? Thanks.

Turning POP off reduces the amount of false alerts. Threat mode is to show multiple bogey threats in different bands at one time. As far as which one to use threat or STD mode, it's a personal preference.
I prefer threat mode that way i can see the different bands being used at the same time.In Upstate NY,you not only have the NYSP but the sherriff also who run different radar systems. The NYSP use KA and Laser. The sherriff uses K and KA...
Does POP mode reduce KA range?
Some members have stated that it does. I have not tested this particular issue and therefore cannot give you a solid yes or no.Quote:

If the range is only like 0.00000000000000001% reduced, then why not? :D
I'm not sure that range is reduced that little. Whistler publishes that their POP mode reduces K/Ka sensitivity by like 2-3dB.. I'm not sure if Belscort does similar things to cut down on falsing.Quote:

I did a search and can't find any mike who made that claim...but if it's true...then great!
alright! if Mike said it, then it's good enough for me too. I'm sure he's tested all of the bels and knows what he's talking about.Quote:

Unable to locate it on these boards after like 10 different search queries.

This was a GREAT Mike reply on POP algorithms and Cobra falsing in general. It doesn't explicitly say anything about Bel and range/sensitivity changes in POP mode, though it does state some of the other changes to Bel's filtering algorithm in POP mode.

Mike Valentine reply about the J alert. Notable quote:
"By our competition" is vague, though I think he is referring to Belscort... I doubt he'd consider Whistler, PNI, Cobra, etc as anything but jokes ;-)Quote:
The common method of reducing the number of false POP alarms used by our competition is to reduce the sensitivity to POP signals (and their Junk kin) while leaving longer-lasting (over half a second) signals unmolested. This method requires reducing POP-radar range to line-of-sight-only distances in order to give enough relief from detector-generated false alarms to be worthwhile. I wasn't satisfied with only line-of-sight range for POP radar reception, so we pushed for a better solution.
I don't get it...does it limit range? I'm not THAT literate with technology...
Short story, we don't know. We do know from Mike's post that POP ON will cause increased occurrence of falsing, and also locks out (rejects) some other frequencies within police radar range as common falses in POP mode.
We really don't know much more than that definitively. Though I am reading Mike Valentine's post as an allusion to Escort/Bel.
This would explain why another forum member mentioned that before he approached a KA instant on location, he would get a POP alert...Quote:

im doing a 1200 mile trip over the next week. will test with LASER, KA, X, K ON, SWS OFF, POP OFF. Autoscan as usual.
