So I was coming home from class and school is only about 2 mins away, really, 2 mins away so I never put on my seat belt from there to home, but I wish I did today.

We're at a light where one lane turns and the other one goes straight and he pulls up (motorcycle) and I'm like "oh ****.. I'm not wearing my seatbelt" and I wanted to put it on but that would have been obvious as hell.. anyway, the light turns green and he pulls me over when I start moving. He turned out to be a pretty nice guy, it went something like this

Me: Hello officer
him: hey, I pulled you over cause you weren't wearing your selt belt, I need your license and proof of insurance
*hands it over*
him: Is that a radar detector?
me: yup
him: does it work?
me: you tell me, ha ha
*he goes to print up the ticket and comes back*

him: OK I just need you to sign here, buckle up!
me: Thanks
him: Want to test your radar detector?
me: sure
*goes to grab his radar gun*

him: ready?
me: yup

So he gets in front of my car and shoots
about 7 seconds later my radar detector finally goes off

he comes to my side and says
"wow thats a long delay, I know a guy that had a 2 second delay. I guess I know which one I'm not going to buy"

So he tries it again but this time he's holding it right up to the radar detector... again 5-7 second delay.

Anyhow, I have an Escort 8500, which I thought was pretty good but there is a 7 second delay at point blank range. Thats kind of dissapointing...

So my question is, how much is a seatbelt ticket in California? I just want to pay for it and get it out of the way.. I hate going to court.

i found this on another car site

i did have an X50 though and sold it... i saw jammertest and it did not alert to stealth laser

but what went wrong? that X50 should have alerted quicker whether it was laser or radar right?

Maybe it's a true story with flawed testing methods? I could have sworn JTW happened upon the same phenomenon with an escort and it was just caused by the fact that it was way too close to the gun. Or I could be on crack.

I was thinking the same thing, with the gun that close the RD's input circuits were probably clipping to the point where it was just digital hash once it reached the DSP, and it filtered it out as a junk signal.

If the cop had gone back a few hundred feet and pulled the trigger, it should have sounded immediately.

Interesting story. I'm glad you returned the X50 to best buy since it failed the test. But my question is, why did you not return your ticket to LEO if it did not state the amount you have to pay for not wearing your seatbelt? I could have believed your story but you failed when you ask us the question "how much do you have to pay for not wearing a seatbelt in california?". Writing the amount for your violation or citation is a "standard operational procedure" for LEO almost in every state CA included. There are options in your violation ticket. You pay the fine which should be in your citation ticket or go to court with the specified date that you have to appear in court. I really have doubts with your story. I believe that the radar did not fail it's test but rather, it was your story that FAILED.

Something does not sound right about this. My R,D has never done this. I think maybe they got a bad X50 or maybe they had a rev 3 LOL!!!!

Actually a cop doesn't have to write the amount of the ticket down. I know this is true in NJ, VA and probably other states since there isn't enough room on the ticket to list all possible violations. If you call the number on the ticket they will tell you how much it is.

The Belscorts are known to do this. At point blank range they get overloaded, and you'll experience strange things such as the delay in detection...

Actually its not their SOP to write in the amount, the courts decide it based on your previous driving history, the amount of traffic on the road, where the location of the ticket was, etc... The Cops don't control the amount of the ticket, even if it is a seatbelt ticket. BTW, seatbelt tickets only run about 60 bucks, but if you want to take it off your drivers license (aka hide it from your ins company) it could shoot up to 120.

Well, that said it all. When you add some things to it, it gets confusing specially when you don't know what was added. :)

My best friend bought a Stalker Sport K band handheld and we went around in my car sortof pretending we were policemen. He was sitting in the passenger seat literally 12 inches from the X50.

The Escort never failed to alert after more than 1 second. I have no idea what the rest of you guys are talking about. Maybe bad units? Maybe if we tried it head on we would have had different results....

The stalker was a very powerful gun, as he stood on an overpass on the freeway as I did circuits to find the range. I got consistant alert at beyond 3 miles around a curve. That goes to show you how powerful that particular gun was. Maybe police radar is a lot more powerful?

It looks like the Sport even has more power output than the police units. Here's the power output for the Sport and two police-version Stalkers on K-band:

Yeah looks like the sport gun is pretty powerful though :)

Seat belt tickets are non-moving violations that do not get reported to the insurance company. There is no need in pleaing it down, and I dont think its possible to plea it down.

Yup. We were sitting on an overpass just waiting to see someone fly by with a radar detector. We saw a Bimmer go under and I hit him. "101" came up! By that time, he was down to 70 in no time flat, he must of been one of us!!
