Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
I've always wanted this carbon fiber hatch lip and finally found a great price on it that was too good to pass up. Anyways, I test fitted it yesterday and after seeing it in person it didn't have the same effect I thought it would. I'm 50/50 about keeping it or selling it. That's when you guys come in. What do you guys think, does it flow with the look or take away from the stock lines?

Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
i think it would interfere with reverse effect of Bernoulli's principle which is why u have a wing

Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
I think you should keep 1 or the other. 2 wings = Rice :p It looks good but not with both on @ the same time.

I gotta agree. The big wing has already "destroyed" the fluidity of the stock lines on the car. I personally would ditch the big one. I never did understand why people eliminated the factory Supra wing in favor of the bulky ones.
-
Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
Before you even think anymore about the wing, you need to blur/cover your plate #'s in those pics.
-
Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
Why are you concerned about the stock lines when you have a massive wing? It would look great if you got rid of the wing and kept the lip.
-
Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
-
Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
I'm not an expert on Supras but wasn't a large wing needed for that car?? It came with a pretty big one stock.
I don't think you need to duck bill under the wing though. What purpose does it serve?
I wanted to pull the stock wing off my GTO but since I regularly drive into triple digits a friend of mine recommended leaving it on, since it was a functional device. Might be the same deal on the Supra. Even light rear lift can be noticeable at speeds as low as 115 mph. I do that at least once a day.

Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
Alright, it's not going on then. It is too much with the TRD wing already there. Btw, the TRD wing isn't that massive, it's the same height and base as the stock wing, it's just the close-up angles that make it look huge.
Thanks for the inputs.

Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
Your poll needs a third option:
* Hatch lip isn't even noticeable thanks to that picnic table you have back there. :D
Seriously, I'd put that money to better use.
Or, as other have suggested, ditch the picnic table and keep the duckbill.

ROFL!! I thought for sure the caption of that picture was going to be something about having some RICE with your vegetables!
Not that my opinion means anything, but you did ask, so I have to agree with the others. I'd dump the wing and keep the lip.

Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
God I can't stand these stupid rice wings.

110% agree. The stock MKIV wing is a thing of elegant beauty.

I know I'm late to the party, but FWIW, I agree.
I like big wings - when they're truly functional - and I think that the TRD wing accomplishes both of those factors (it continually amazes me how much actual development the OEMs actually undertake, and I'd well bet that TRD wing actually truly outperforms the stock high-wing, which itself is, for those here who are not familiar, a truly functional piece).
The interior lip just looks out-of-place. Even if it added even more downforce, I'd really think twice about adding it, particularly for street-use, as it, to me, just clutters the area.
If you're still fond of the lip, though, and it does add downforce, I'd consider buying it, anyway, and affixing it to a spare trunk setup, for track-days/hot-lapping and/or show, when you could also bolt-on your TRD wing. There's many Scooby owners who do things this way, as they prefer a "sleeper look" during the week, and will get into full-combat-dress only for the track.

Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
Heh.
I was in heavy traffic on the 5 the other day. Some dude in a Porsche passed me, but there was nowhere for him to go due to traffic ahead, so he was stuck going the same speed as everyone else. After a few seconds, I saw his little robotic spoiler go up. http://bestsmileys.com/clueless/7.gif
I thought those were only supposed to pop up above a certain speed (i.e. when they might actually be useful), but apparently this one could be controlled manually. Congratulations, Mr. Porsche Driver - for the extra $60,000 you paid for your car, you are certainly entitled to have little toys like that spoiler. :D
-
Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
^ Oh yep, on a lot of vehicles, that kind of thing is not only affected by vehicle speed, but can be made to go up and down by the driver.
It's actually not that new - look back to the Japanese "Boom Economy" techno-wondercars of the 90s....the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 also had such a setup.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of automotive cuture pretty much stops at the late 80s mark. That's when I started to get interested in cars (age 12 or so). :o Undoubtedly, some of the older guys and gals here can point to even earlier examples of such.

^ :p On the Supras of that generation (the OP's), I think they produced something like 50 pounds (or was that kilos?) of downforce, as low as at 50 MPH.
That, to me, is quite impressive, particularly given the "vintage" of the vehicle, and what little we understood of aerodynamics, at that time.
-
Re: Hey guys, I need your opinions again. Lots of pics, sorry.
still we both know that 50 mph is childs play

LOL! It's funny to think that, thirty-eight years after landing on the moon, their engineers wouldn't know anything about aerodynamics.

The aerodynamics of the picnic table wing were well understood even back in 1970:

Very good point. I'll have to remember that one!
And it is also true, by then, that the forward/nose "lip" had come into play as well, if my recollection of the race-cars of that era holds true.
Similarly, I believe that my statement prior/above also overlooked the Tucker's advances in this area.
:o
See, I told y'all that my youth and inexperience would eventually show! :o
----
OK, but at the same time, I still can't believe these aero faux-pas:
- First-generation US/North-American bound Audi TT
- Mercedes CLR-GTR (Le Mans)
And those are "modern" vehicles.
That's why I framed my statement above, regarding the Supra Mk.IV's factory wing, the way I did. ;)
Thank you, guys, for your corrections!
Y'all are oldies! :D

I would take the big wing off because it looks ricey and redicoulous.
And I really hope nobody on this forum has a fwd car and has a spoiler on the back. I laugh when i see that, and most of them don't even make the car look good they just make there car uglyier and makes it perform worse.

True to an extent. Those who actually road race seriously would beg to differ though. It becomes a necessity in serious amateur or professional road racing competition.
