Escort 9500ci Installed
For the concealed display, I mounted it INSIDE the tachometer! I got an extra cluster on eBay to destroy, but it turned out a lot better than I ever hoped. Only downsides are the 7 is no longer illuminated, and the 6 is a little dark. Can't complain about that though when the rest looks so good.

Some construction pictures.

With all the though put into the display, I couldn't just use the supplied control panel, had to customized that too. I rewired my Commodore window switch to have all the function the 9500ci has.

Nothing is exciting about the outside, the rear shifter goes on the plate, and everything else in the front lower grill.
The V1 will be going back in shortly, not sure exactly where though.

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Very inspiring.
I've been toying with an stir or 9500ci this past week.... this is just one more reason to buy.

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
That is the slickest in-dash RD display installation I have ever seen. Wow!

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
haha wow! have you considered opening some kind of shop? or doing free lance work on the net? this is just amazing, mad props man.

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
That is an amazing install, well done.

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Wow jealous! That is a great install! I wish I had the 1600 to spend on a ci!
-
Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Beautiful, absolutly insane install

One great install Reb, exactly what I would expect from you. Keep up the good work, it inspires us all.

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
that's badass. is there any chance you just knocked out a bulb from the display?
Usually it'll look that way. It'll be dark where the bulb is, and a little area away from it will be dimmer than the rest. but the display is beautiful anyway. Nice job!

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Another creative installation from REBinc, keep up the good work.

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Escort should feature REBinc's install on their web site.

No sh!+! Your work is amazing! Great stuff!
I assume the display obstructs the backlight for the 6 and 7? No worries, you should never see 7k rpms in a GTO anyways. Awesome install!
Ditto that install feature on Escorts site!

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Looks so stealth like it's supposed to be part of the dash's instrument cluster, looks like an odometer or something hah, so slick I still can't get over it, that picture would make a great desktop wallpaper

Seriously, REB, that is beautiful work. I don't know how in the world you got that tacho cut out so perfectly!
Wiring the Commodore switch panel as your remote was genius! Easier to work with than the stock remote too, I would imagine. I agree, you ought to be doing this professionally, and charging others to teach them the art!

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Thanks for all the compliments, I just keep trying more complicated stuff, keeps me busy. Right now I'm only comfortable taking apart GTOs, so I have done 2 other installs in the Chicago area. Each one gets a little nicer too. I ran all my wires with 1/2" tubing to keep everything neat, and didn't use 3M or duct tape on anything :D.
I decided against the lower grill mounting for the radar head, and put it in the passenger side kidney grill where I originally had my SRX.
Also, I finally got a chance to take it out to do some snow drifting, and I got some testing done in between. The 9500ci always alerted on K before the V1, but the V1 still had better X range. I also like how it gives a more exact frequency in spec mode than the SRX did. No cops were outside to play so Ka is unknown. The 9500ci is also VERY loud, I think I could hear it going 150 with windows down.
And lastly, in case no one noticed the V1 is absent in this little arrangement. I will be adding a new display for that as well over winter break.

Be sure to keep us posted, I may have to get a GTO and some new countermeasures and take a drive down to Chicago ;)

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
I'm just curious, but has anyone ever tested a Ci with a V1 mounted in the same place? i.e. - the Ci comes with that huge receiver versus the V1's small antennas, and the V1 is usually windshield mounted; maybe 5-7' behind where the Ci would be.
I wonder what the results would be mounting the V1 within the same plane as the Ci?
For the price difference, I'd think the Ci should ALWAYS beat the V1 for early detection in all bands.

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
And some pictures of the outside since I spent the time in the cold to wash the car. And don't all you jump at me about head positioning and blah blah blah, they're just temp mounted to get the right amount of wire there, I didn't even take off the protectant plastic yet. They'll be all nice and level with the LIs in a little bit. Rebuilding is slow (but it is a great paint job on my bumper :)).

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
nice pics, can't believe you washed the car in that weather, I didn't even bother on my blinder install pics, nobody on this forum has to ride in my car and the only thing I care about is the concept of the install and that the countermeasures work. Craftsman ship is always a plus too ;) and you def. got that going for you Reb!

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Be very, very careful. I'm calling it now. Your 35.5 detection will be almost nonexistent with your radar antenna mounted behind that honeycomb grill. Make sure you are running your V1 along with the 9500ci until I'm proven right. :D

I was wondering about that too.. that's the same spot he ran the SRX tho.. maybe 35.5 isn't a threat in IL. I've been looking for an alternate grill for pontiac but that part of the car just doesn't seem to be huge interest, there are some mesh grills, but no slanted ones like the one on the bottom of the car

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
I got one Ka on the way to work, it was 34.945 I think. It picked it up fine. The V1 also picked up a nice full strength Cobra while the 9500ci was silent. The only other place is too low so I think the range will be reduce too much by that. I moved the SRX down there for a couple days, it seemed a little worse. It's also subceptable to getting knocked out by deer. I may go with the sports apperance package grills later on, which are deeper and have the option of no honey comb, if this clear view stuff is proven.

trust me it is a threat here in IL, this is the only ka band frequency I have seen so far since I have been a 4 year rd owner.

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
Reb you have great cabilities but why spend the money on something like this and not install it right. I also think your more than capable of installing it like a master piece with out sacrificing the look of your car. Your one of a kind and better than me and if I'm saying that you can install it like they painted the mona lisa. Btw I think your next show car should be named Mona

X2!, I think he'll think of something even better then the grill, I bet he'll be cutting out the middle piece of his hood and making it look like part of the hood latch all stealthlike...I donno what he'll do, but I'm sure if he puts his mind to it he'll find the perfect spot and it'll take us all by surprise.

+1.
I'm glad to see that she's back, in all her glory, REB. :)
But man, how long did you have to spend, breaking off all the icicles?

Re: Escort 9500ci Installed
YCTD, I'm not sure what you're talking about being installed incorrectly. The laser jammers are temporary until I can jack up the car and adjust things with the LI in place. As for the radar head, I don't simply believe everything I read on the internet. I'll do my own testing, if there's a difference I'll remove the grill, but the radar head will be mounted there regardless. Based on the SRX, it performed better behind the grill higher than it did having an open view lower.

Fair enough. I think that's a healthy attitude. I look forward to seeing the results of your testing. Thank God that radar guns are a lot cheaper than laser guns!
