Re: Erratic K band alerts
Any drones visible? Are you still under warranty?

However, it did not track with any adjacent vehicle and strangely disappeared almost as qucikly as it appears (though it may last (on and off) upwards of 30 minutes when it has occurred). The alerts are clearly falses of some sort, but are not being caused by anything in my own car as they have only occurred on a couple of occasions. They are not like typical falses - no ramp up, just a sudden K burst of 4 or more dots that lasts just a few seconds and quickly disappears, only to be repeated multiple times every thirty seconds or so. Then for no apparent reason they will disappear. In all other respects, the detector is working fine - I drove 2 thousand miles with it over the holidays and this just occurred once in all of that distance. I do recall however a similar thing happening a few weeks ago also. Any thoughts?
Interesting since you have POP off. Is this common or just a 1 time occurance? Are you using the same car? didn't get a new one?
Re: Erratic K band alerts
Excuse my ignorance mikeRed30, but what are drones and what do they look like? Also I'm no longer under warranty and as I say, I've only noticed this behavior a couple of times...

A drone is like speed or construction signs that emit radar signals. I would not worry if you got it a couple of times.
Re: Erratic K band alerts
Passing a shopping center, strip mall, etc?
Re: Erratic K band alerts
No... this wasn't your typical K band speed sign - which I generally pick up 1-2 miles away with a gradual ramp up and ramp down after passing. These are 3-5 second bursts, sometimes full strength, sometimes less (arrows behaving erratically), then silence. 30-60 seconds or so later, this repeats and so on for half an hour or so of driving. I had to turn off for several miles until this finally disappeared. (simply turning off and on did not clear the problem).
Re: Erratic K band alerts
Where was this and what road? I have encountered drones putting out pulses of k band before, but not for miles like you described.
Re: Erratic K band alerts
Sounds like a false from an Audi to me.
Re: Erratic K band alerts
Maybe there was an Audi Q7 or higher end Mercedes with radar based active cruise control near you. Did the arrow always point to one direction for all the alerts?
Re: Erratic K band alerts
Thanks for all the suggestions. I was on I70 in close to the Indiana/Illinois state line (cant recall which side I was on at the time - I'm going to say Illinois, heading west). If this happens again I'll look out for the Audi or Merc; I dont know what range their radar cruise controls work over, but I'd imagine it would have to be pretty close. And given that this was over a fairly long stretch of road, I think I would have noticed the pattern - but I'll pay more attention next time. My recollection is that the arrows would fluctuate during alerts - somewhat erratically.

You described the solar-powered radar sensors perfectly, you were in one of these places i don't see Indiana/Illinois:

I saw the ones in Omaha.
Re: Erratic K band alerts
i know they have a lot of those signs on the indiana toll road but they are to detect animals that are crossing the road to help alert drivers...really annoying cuz a leo could easily hide in this area and be shooting c/o and you would never know

Bogy lock tone (threat count) problem is then you would have to keep a close eye on muted K volume and LED's.
